My favourite Neon Genisis pairings are as follows:
Shinji/Rei purely because they have a cool feeling and look so right together despite Rei having family relations and being a clone of his mother to a point.
Shinji/Asuka because they are a cute couple, the loud and brash versus the meeek and tender.
Shinji/Maya simply because it is an unknown.

Ranma/Cologne pairing after Saffron incident and taking de-aqging mushrooms.
Must have Ranma despise Akane.
Ranma is not Nodoka or Genma's child but Ryoko's and is on the Saotome Familiy Registar.
Has same powers as Ryoko but is also blessed by Tsunami.
Has no real father besides the Masu.
Ranma is smarter than average.
Still has curse but can be contained to willling shifts because of acceptance.
Ranma flirts mercilessly like Ryoko but does it in both forms weirding out people.
Ranma becomes Grandmaster of Anything Goes.

Shinji not so spineless.
Shinji has been taught martial arts or some form of combat.
Asuka isn't such an arrogant female dog because she is humbled by Shinji in some way or form.
Rei has at least SOME emotion and isn't a frigid iceberg with a spike of ice shoved where the sun don't shine.
