Author has written 26 stories for Harry Potter. "Um. I don't think they're that secular. But, obviously, Dumbledore is not Jesus." -- J.K. Rowling, in reference to the Harry Potter books, Time Magazine interview, 17 July 2005 "I think it's impossible not to put a little bit of yourself into any character, because you have to imagine their motivation." -- J. K. Rowling, BBC "Living with Harry Potter" interview, 10 December 2005 Two months after the publication of Deathly Hallows, my interest in writing fanfiction is wearing better than I thought it would. In fact, my mind is seething with plot bunnies, some of which concern major characters (Neville, George) and some of which stray far from canon, often into the Muggle world. At the moment I'm giving top priority to my Neville sketches and my multi-chapter George Weasley romance. Two of my old ships, Neville/Susan and Ernie/Hannah, have been sunk by recent revelations; I relinquish Neville/Susan without much regret but I am having a much harder time letting go of Ernie/Hannah and of their eldest child, who was to have had a vital cameo in the sequel to "Simple." Oh, well-- life doesn't always work out as one plans. For now, "Life after Death" remains very much a part of my imaginative world, and I deliberately left some traces of Ernie/Hannah in my updated version of "Simple." I assume that Neville and Hannah won't get together until several years after the war, and I am already toying with a few ideas about how to depict their courtship. All future stories will fit together (and, in most respects, with my pre-DH stories) and will be fully canon-compliant through DH, with one exception: Penelope Clearwater will always be Muggle-born in my book. I'm attached to the version of Penelope that I've created; moreover, I'm intrigued by the notion that Percy, the Ministry stooge, may have had a long-term relationship with a Muggle-born witch. I remain fascinated by relationships between Muggle-born witches and wizards and their Muggle parents and siblings-- a situation that seems to me fraught with anxiety and pain-- and by the difficulties of crossing from the Muggle to the magical world. As a writer, I am primarily concerned with character. I prefer to keep the sex and violence understated. Few of these stories are light, but they're all reasonably clean. I find it difficult to write characters who are not basically sympathetic, so my stories are replete with Hermione, Remus, Neville, and the Weasleys, and mostly devoid of the Slytherin crowd. My historical training and my fairly traditional Jewish religious mores show a great deal, I suspect, in my approach to fiction-- but I hope this won't prevent all sorts of people from enjoying these stories! 21 October 2007 | |||||||||||
