| Abby Normal |
Author has written 8 stories for Titanic, Dogma, Movie X-overs, and TV X-overs. "Abby someone...Abby Normal." -Young Frankenstein I mostly write Titanic fan fiction, but I do have other fandoms that I adore equally: Farscape, Highlander, Star Wars (the original), Indiana Jones, Firefly, and Harry Potter, among many others - though I've written little or no fic for them. As a reader and as a writer I tend to gravitate toward sci-fi, fantasy, action-adventure, and the just plain bizarre. James Cameron was a sci-fi director before he did Titanic so I think there's a correlation there. I really tend to read or write anything actually, I'm eclectic and easy to please. But my favorite kind of stories are definitely sagas with complex plots and characters, and broad scopes. The main reason I've written so much for Titanic is, while it was about a single event and a single relationship, it so rich that it can be expanded into many worlds and stories, especially about Rose's life. If you're still interested in reading any of the stories below, I'll do the best to explain my sensibilities as a writer as objectively as I can: -I'm not a very fluffy writer. Although I am a firm believer that not all sentiment is inorganic (yes, real people can speak in metaphors, be romantic, or say "I love you" and mean it without beating you over the head with it) I don't like gushiness without substance. I think some of my earlier writing is too melodramatic for my tastes now, but I hope not painfully so. -I like gray areas. No black and white characters. No mustache-twirling bad guys and boy scout heroes. These things work fine in spoofs or if the author is purposely setting up caricurtures but not if you want organic, realistic, complex characters. Good guys aren't all good; bad guys aren't all bad. (a shining example of this, in my opinion, is Farscape.) Real people have contradictions and any relationship (of any kind) that lacks tension isn't worth anything. Just because life is messy does not mean it isn't beautiful. And if you've never sinned, it means your life's been too easy. -Again, given that I've gotten myself crazy-obsessed with a James Cameron movie, I tend to write like I'm writing a JC film: there will be some action. Plus. being about Titanic, I tend to weave in lots of other history as well. -Anything I write, no matter how serious the overall story, will be funny. People with no sense of humor (especially about themselves) are not to be trusted. Life is absurd. Let's laugh at it every now and then. Just like the real people you love, you will cry harder with characters if you can laugh with them. | |||||
