My name is Rebecca. I am currently a sophomore in college majoring in Criminal Justice.
My favorite TV show is Law and Order: SVU (bet you couldn't figure THAT one out) and I'll give you a cookie if you can guess my favorite character (hint: check my pen name). But aside from that delicious side of beefcake I enjoy every week, the show has a deeper meaning for me.
I am a member of the RESPONSE team, an all-volunteer organization that works with victims of sexual assault. We are a partner with the YWCA and a sister team with a Domestic Abuse/Child Endangerment center that works around my area. We provide a 24-hour crisis hotline for victims of assault/molestation/abuse, support for victims during Physical Evidence Recovery Examinations, and assistance during interview and court proceedings.
I have numerous stories on this site, but one in particular I was compelled to do because of this field. Titled "Trip Wire", it takes a journey with a victim through assault, recovery, and healing. Though I use characters and concepts from the beloved Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, the idea behind the work is to provide a look into the world of a victim to show the reality of such a heinous situation. The transition from victim to survivor is a journey that is darker than most could ever imagine, and it is my hope that through my story, more will realize that this kind of tragedy can and does happen to every type of person.
Every person who is a survivor of a sexual assault is a hero, and I can only pray that more is done to recognize these amazing individuals for their courage.
