Hi there, I'm Ashley. I've been reading fanfiction for what seems like forever and and I pretty picky tastes. I've been a member here since 2001, and these have been seven long and...well, tear-jerking years on the site (tear jerking, of course, from the people who insist that Anomen is a rapist and that godforsaken Xan mod is the pinnacle of writing). I guess I should do a rundown for you guys.
Favorite Anime: Bo-bo-bo, Fushigi Yuugi
Least Favorite Anime: Naruto and FMA (mostly for the fan communities; they are decent if not slightly boring in their own right)
MOST HATED ANIME: Neon Genesis Evangelion
Favorite Games: Baldur's Gate (1&2), Mass Effect, Monopoly, Tetris, Clue, Final Fantasy 5, Final Fantasy 10, Final Fantasy 12, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Zoo Tycoon, Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, Harvent Moon: MFoMT, Golden Sun
Least Favorite Games: Icewind Dale (1&2), Animal Crossing (I enjoy it, but I don't have "fun" as much as I veg out for hours in my futile goal to collect more bells and win the favor of my master, Tom Nook).
Favorite TV Shows: Iron Chef, Good Eats, The Secret Life of..., Dinner: Impossible, Dirty Jobs, most of the things on NatGeo, House Hunters
Favorite Genres: Romance (regrettably), suspense, horror, paranormal, sci-fi, fantasy.
Least Favorite Genres: Hurt/comfort. Hurt/comfort. Hurt/comfort.
Favorite Characters: Anomen, Kivan, Imoen, Garrus, Auron, Cyclops
Least Favorite Characters: Jaheira, everyone from Evangelion, most of the people from Utena
It should be noted here that I'm way more of a games player than an anime watcher, and I really don't watch anime anymore. No, not even the "cool" ironic anime that makes fun of the other ones. (Bo-bo-bo pulled this off for me, and I just can't watch other parodies without thinking I could be watching Bo-bo-bo instead.) I like comics and superheroes, but I'm not an avid comic book reader; I'm an avid PnPer, but that really doesn't count. I'm more of a lurker than a contributor. My only story is an Angelique story about stupid pairings that I wrote one day when I was sick of seeing Clavis/Lumi. I mean, there's one doujinshi out there where Lumi's just walking around nude and Clavis just has sex with him for no reason. I mean, really. What the hell.
I like to review fanfics but I'm normally very nervous about hurting peoples' feelings. I'm going to be honest, though, and I believe in CONSTRUCTIVE critcism. This means I will also tell you what you did well with the story and what you can do to improve, not just saying "lol your main character sucks, hey guys I'm cool now, right". Sure, you might have a Mary Sue, but it's not hurting anyone (not significantly) and if you're not interested in making a well developed character, I'm not going to hound you about taking it offline. However, it means you should be prepared for people telling you your story, characters, or anything else sucks! If you're blind to criticism, then why bother writing? What's the point of pouring heart and soul into a story but never wanting to blossom it into what it could reach? Why stunt potential? I haven't seen too much of this, but it's out there.
Derail aside, I'm a critic, but a polite critic. I like reviewing stories more than I like writing my own. Pretty sad, really, but what can I do?
I love puns, surivial horror, and excellent characterization. I hate hurt/comfort, whiners, and angsty, emo characters. I hate them to where I can nearly physically manifest that hate and send it on a path of slaughter and bloodshed unseen and unrivaled, even by a thousand Mayan sacrifices being performed all at once.
Lastly, if Garrus LIVES IN THE CITADEL, why did he take Shepherd to a hotel?! Why?!
