God and Human Nature

Dean Koontz somehow finds some way to incorporate religion in some of his stories, whether it is about god giving us mercy or god showing us how difficult things can be both found in his stories The Taking and Velocity. Those two books are actually great examples of were someone would find some cross reference with god and man. Even though they are good examples in themselves we can also look at reality and see what else is out there other than things others make up for us to be entertained. With all these things there is plenty to show how God influences man kind and their every action they take.

As one can see there are some huge and major points on how God has effected our life and how this and religion together effect what we believe in. It’s almost too noticeable now and if someone looked close enough I’m sure they could find where God has made everyone do split second choices before like he had done with people from the stories and reality. Even though now it is easily seen that god can influence our lives so easily the next problem to look at religion; which will show the influences god has on every day life.

A good way to find an example of this is when someone reads Dean Koontz’s novel The Taking. The book is basically putting a bunch of normal day people in a modern day society in an apocalyptic situation dealing with aliens that are supposedly from another universe. The way this event relates to God is that it is actually a thought of the apocalypse and how it might actually be. It is believed that hell will come onto earth and take those who have sinned and are not worthy to belong in the heavenly kingdom. With this people see that the aliens, or better learned later as demons, come and claim the people who must go to hell by using their hands to remove the faces of those that belong in hell instead of heaven. Those who were spared are almost pictured as angels.

The people who are pictured as angels to me are those that are out on the streets dodging the demons they see and saving those that are truly innocent which means those that have not sinned. I believe he meant to picture those people as angels because angels were told to be able to save people and the people depicted as angels, such as Neil and Molly, are out saving children that the demons want because of their innocence.

The Innocent is the next thing that shows how God relates to the human nature. The innocent are always pictured as children because they don’t know exactly what is good or bad yet. The thing that is weird about this though is the belief that we are all born with sin and we have to get rid of it so the true question is that are all these children out there truly innocent or are we putting a blindfold over our eyes and telling ourselves that they don’t know any better?

A second way to find an excellent source where God and Human Nature mix is with another Dean Koontz novel, Velocity. This book is an excellent source to look for these things and the easiest one to see at first is how Dean Koontz tries to show people how God would be as a human. This is done with the main character named Billy who happens to only be an ordinary bartender who doesn’t really show any religious belief. Despite this he is given an ultimatum that God would probably face every day with a simple note found on car under a windshield wiper. "If you don't take this note to the police and get them involved I will kill a lovely blonde school teacher somewhere in Napa County. If you do take this note to the police, I will instead kill an elderly woman active in charity work. You have six hours to decide. The choice is yours" (Koontz, 10). Just like that he shows how it would be for a human to make a choice that god makes every day of our lives.

The other way to see how God and maybe more like religion influences our nature is with the depiction of the devil in this story embodied in a human. Dean Koontz chooses the perfect way to show this not only using one person but actually two people who try to bring down Billy from where he is in the world. Each one is exactly like half of the devil, playing tricks on the person pictured as god and making him do things that he wishes he didn’t have to do. The first half is sly and cunning knowing what he is doing and making sure to possibly drive Billy out of what life he might be holding on to. This one half of the devil pictured in the story calls what he does to Billy art. The other half isn’t exactly those qualities but more of a good actor and great at deception. He is great at deceiving Billy throughout the story by flat out lying to him when he is even about to die and even acting as a good friend as he works at the bar with Billy before all that mess started in the first place. With two antagonists throughout the story it is easily seen how these two could be the human embodiment of the devil trying to take down the power of god like it was once said in the bible.

Another place to look at how god influences our everyday activity is right before everyone’s eyes in the reality that we live in. Everywhere people look we can find something that is easily influencing our nature due to the religion that we follow. A good example is actually when looking at a skyscraper. Those were built a few years ago but did anyone know what the real purpose of actually building a skyscraper was? The point was actually to get up to the skies so that maybe we could see if heaven was up in the clouds as people had actually thought, and that is why we built them. We built them because God influenced us to believe the heavens were up above us.

The best thing to look at in reality that most likely ties in with the thought of God and human nature is miracles which happen to each and every one of us that save peoples lives. Take the instances that the police force goes through every day when they might have some hostage situation or a murderous criminal out on the streets that endangers every ones lives. Despite that the force somehow finds a way to make us feel safer and even then finds a way to save lives that could have been easily lost.

This brings up a subject dealing with miracles; the hero’s that perform the miracles also play a major role. These people have done the extraordinary and even more than that to be honest which brings up a question: were these people just lucky or were they given some god given right to save these people? To be honest we cannot even begin to say that either way is true or not but some people tend to just say it was a miracle and god had helped them through it. I can not say that it was not something the god had intended or if it was just luck but sometimes things like this make us wonder if he really does effect how we act in our everyday activities.

Well to say the least God can be seen all around us if we just open our eyes and our minds and look outward onto the world and see what others might say what is unexplained as a miracle or even better. I hope that this has opened many eyes into seeing what possibilities are out there and possibly made someone think twice about what people think were miracles and what others say is just dumb luck. Also this should help people see that God does have as much trouble as we do and it is wrong to think that we could deal with what he does any time of the day instead of our ordinary, boring lives. So now will there be more people opening their eyes and looking out into the world to see what could be or will people just stay blinded by facts and think that the thought of God doesn’t influence our every day life.
