I originally started my ff.net account years ago, in order to post some Harry Potter/Snapefic. Alas, I abandoned that shortly after, because I preferred working on my original fic and the story went all lopsided anyway. But I've had some Pern-based and Talent-based fics floating around my head for around 12 years now, so once Anne McCaffrey lifted the ban on fanfiction, and indeed on fanfic using her canon characters as well, I sort of rejoiced. Most RPG-based Pern-fic reads all the same to me; I'm much more interested in stories about known characters.
Which is where my fiction comes in.
Sackcloth and Ashes is an Alternate Universe story based on this thought: What if Afra hadn't been able to assist Damia in her teleport, and Rowan hadn't been able to hang onto the liner? Afra was scared out of his wits in Damia when this happened with the best possible outcome--what would happen if the worst outcome had happened instead? For one, all those Raven-Lyon kids wouldn't have been born with their surplus of Talent, changing the future considerably. Sodan wouldn't have happened the way it did, the Mrdini wouldn't have happened...at least not in the same way. And poor Afra wouldn't have the love of his life waiting for him 20 years down the line.
Boxed: A Story of Talent on the other hand is not AU. It's set after The Tower and the Hive, but is based on a premise from The Rowan - what would the FT&T have to do to protect itself and others if a Prime-level Talent got corrupted in some way at an early age? There's a throwaway line in The Rowan about the reason everyone and their mother were monitoring the poor girl; they were afraid her tragic experience at the age of three would forever color her life and screw up her personality. But...being honest...the Rowan didn't have it nearly as bad as the book made out. Yes, she lost her parents, but she had an extremely loving foster family, and loving friends, and she never wanted for food, clothing, shelter, etc. How would a Prime that had been well and truly abused shape up? And how would the FT&T, needing to protect itself and its status for the sake of all its Talents, react, and how would the uber-adjusted Gwen/Raven/Lyons deal with her? Anne McCaffrey makes excellent worlds and 'good' characters, but I don't think she likes to contemplate 'gray areas', where generally good people do bad things (unless it's obviously an accident, such as Damia's tragic love affair with Amir), or bad people who occasionally have a streak of decency. So that's where my fic fits in.
One interesting thing about writing these two fics is the way Afra changes dramatically. In Sackcloth he's very much the Afra in the first half of the book Damia; still young, occasionally confused, and fighting with himself, his Methody upbringing, his crush on the Rowan, and more. On the other hand, in Boxed he's the father of eight kids, married the love of his life, and has been among people who love and accept him for years. He's a lot more stable. And he's also fourty years older, heh.
And Then There Was One is a story about how Peter Reidinger IV became Earth Prime, and how Siglen and Guzman did not. It's also a story about how the broad powers of Earth Prime can be abused by both under-use and over-use.
The Skyboom is a Pern fic. It's an alternate universe where, through a foolhardy stunt of F'lon's, Robinton and F'lon end up emerging from between into a modern (9th pass) Pern. It originally did not have a plot, but, like plots often do, a few pretty damn spectacular plots have been emerging out from nowhere in my head. Suffice to say, I think you'll be very surprised. And this will end up either being a really, really good fic if I can pull these plots off, or a really, really crappy one. You decide! Tell me in reviews. I like reviews. They keep me writing!
(FYI--"Skyboom" is deliberate; it's not missing an "r" by mistake.)
The Perfect-Matched (fanfiction.net won't let me put the hyphen in the title, but it should be there)--this is somewhat of a sequel to The Skyboom, despite that The Skyboom has not been finished. It is about Menolly's daughter who Impresses in the 9th pass, after having been born during the 2nd Long Interval when Fax was coming to power.
Ideas currently on the back burner:
Who wants to know more about the luuurrvve triangle that chewed Kincaid up and spat him out? I do, I do!
In general, I apologize for any spelling, grammar, canon, or other related mistakes. I still don't have a beta, so I'm sort of winging things and pretty much posting chapters as-is after writing them. Feel free to alert me to any mistakes you see.
