Season 1 aired in the U.S. in the fall of 2003. Season 2 premiered in January 2005, and the season finale aired on Easter Sunday; we learned the show had been canceled May 11. A wonderful Carnivale convention, CarnyCon, was held in April 2006. At the convention, series creator Daniel Knauf gave fans some tantalizing hints about his planned future storyline. We hope we'll be able to see it someday, in some form. I had seen all of Season 1 before I wrote any fan fiction; I've continued writing during and since the airing of Season 2. In almost every case, I've tried to keep my stories reconcilable with canon that had been definitely established at the time of writing. I never imagined I could make correct guesses at the future direction of the story, or at explanations of its mysteries. For me, part of the fun always was in knowing I'd be able to see, in retrospect, how far off my speculations had been. I'm keeping all the fics posted, because others may also enjoy realizing how much of the now-familiar canon was unknown at the time they were written. (And purely as writing, some of the fics aren't half bad!) I still think of two "missing scene" fics, "Answers on Demand" and "Setting Her Straight," as part of my personal Carnivale universe. I have one post-Season 2 series written prior to CarnyCon: that includes "Ten Times Trouble," "Awakenings," "Twisting the Truth," "Possibilities," "Prevarication," "Decision," "Deceit," "New Arrivals," and "Where There's Life, There's Lies." The new canon established at CarnyCon rendered that series so "alternate universe" that I've abandoned it, at least for now. As of this date, everything I've written since CarnyCon, with the single exception of "Mercy Delayed Is Mercy Denied," can be imagined as taking place at different times in the same reality, even though it wasn't planned that way. | |||||||||
