There's nothing to writing. All you do is sit down with a pen and open a vein. ~Walter Wellesley

The 19 Rules for good Riting:
Each pronoun agrees with their antecedent.
Just between you and I, case is important.
Verbs has to agree with their subject.
Watch out for irregular verbs which has cropped up into our language.
Don't use no double negatives.
A writer mustn't shift your point of view.
When dangling, don't use participles.
Join clauses good like a conjunction should.
And don't use conjunctions to start sentences.
Don't use a run-on sentence you got to punctuate it.
About sentence fragments.
In letters themes reports articles and stuff like that we use commas to keep strings apart.
Don't use commas, which aren't necessary.
Its important to use apostrophe's right.
Don't abbrev.
Check to see if you any words out.
In my opinion I think that the author when he is writing should not get into the habit of making use of too many unnecessary words which he does not really need.
Then, of course, there's that old one: Never use a preposition to end a sentence with.
Last but not least, avoid cliches like the plague.

Update 6-27-10

I recently stumbled across an article on a pretty funny website, but the message in it struck true. There was a part in particular that made me think.

"According to recent studies, more children today than ever before aspire to be celebrities. Not actors, or artists or entrepreneurs, mind you, but celebrities, and all the vague nonsense that that implies. Meanwhile, with the rise of blogs and Twitters and social media, more people than ever before are succumbing to an aggravating kind of narcissism that promotes the idea that everyone has something important to say, that people care about what you have to say, even if what you have to say is total and complete BS. Go to Facebook. You've got six-million people all addressing an audience that isn't even there." --Cracked.com

Now, if you're fluent in Facebook, you are probably familiar with the people who continually post things on their wall with the delusion that people will actually care. In fact, that might even be you. Ever since I read this article I stopped doing just that, but only occasionally posting if I knew people would care. It really opened my eyes to today's generation. It seems to be the general consensus with my friends that they would all like to be famous. Actor, singer, doctor, whatever. They all expect their names in headlines and for the world to know them for whatever reason. Unfortunately, in today's world people are more familiar with Paris Hilton than they are with Ghandi. A girl who made a sex tape and is filthy rich is better known (and probably idolized) than a man who single-handedly revolutionized freedom and civil rights across the world. Is this our parent's faults? Was it wrong of them to not have their child be fluent in public-figurism? I suppose that's part of the problem, because I know my mother could care less about me knowing about incredible people like Ghandi. She would rather read People Magazine. Is that wrong? I guess not, because it is truly more interesting to know about the life of a high-class celebrity than a guy who starved himself to free India from...blah blah blah. I'm guessing you tuned out after ‘celebrity’. If I had said that to my friends, they would laugh in my face and call me some really creative name like 'nerd' or ‘geek.’ But how much sense does it make, really, to aspire to be famous if that fame brings, not change to the world, but simply the acknowledgment that you are famous? We are humans, and as humans we like people caring about us. These days, having family care about us is not enough. We want the world to know our names, and we don't care how that happens. We want 30 million people tuning into our Facebook pages. Who cares if you're a slut and like buying stuff like sweaters for your dog? You're famous!

I admit; I myself aspire to be famous. My biggest wish is to appear of Oprah one day, for crying out loud! But maybe something that separates people who want to be famous by any means or people who want to be famous by doing something worthwhile is actually respect for themselves. I was planning on getting famous by being the youngest best-selling author who ever lived. Is that considered worthwhile? In any case, I respect myself enough to want to actually do something that takes talent to be famous. Respect also separates people who want to get famous in any way from people who could care less. If you respect yourself enough to know that getting to the top isn't the only thing that matters, then congratulations. You have escaped this generation’s self-important mindset. I hope you're the president in thirty years, instead of a narcissist who decides that being president is pretty cool because people now know your name and are pressing the ‘like’ button on your Facebook status.

Further Reading

I now have a beta reader for my 100,000 word story, The Red Thorns!! Thank you Lida (forever4)!! Here is a lovely banner for the story, by the wonderful piglet on TDA:

http://i40.tinypic.com/1628dip.jpg

Here is a larger summary than the one on the story, which is now up and running!

It's the last year at Hogwart's, and despite Rose being faced with the Head Girl position, as well as the Head Boy who happens to be Scorpius Malfoy, she's must face something much worse. This year a tournament is taking place at Hogwarts, between all four of the houses, meant to bring out the qualities of each house in each of the four champions. But the tasks aren't fire-breathing dragons and spells of the most evil kind. They're something much worse. Rose must battle her way through four tasks that question her deepest fears and desires, her greatest loyalties and bonds, and her ability to see the truth through all the deception. And above all, she must win over the one thing that is in her way: Scorpius Malfoy. She must manipulate him into weakness by making him fall for her, and try with all her heart not to fall for him in the process.

Also: I will give an arm and a leg and a place on the wall of fame if you spread the word about this story!!! If I get 100 reviews within the next three chapters, I will put every reviewer on every wall of fame I own! PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD! If you are an author, and you've worked hard on a story, then you know how great it is for a lot of people to appreciate it. PLEASE!

About Me

Name: Chloe

Age: 14, born March 13, 1996

Looks: I look oddly like Taylor Swift, except blue eyes and not as Chinese.

Animal: Ostrich

Color: Blue, blue, blue

Religion: Agnostic. Buddhist? :D

Political Views: Socially liberal, fiscally conservative.

Book: Harry Potter, The Life of Pi, Lord of the Flies, The Book Theif, The Kite Runner, the Old Man and the Sea, The Reader, To Kill a Mockingbird, Watership Down, The Hunger Games, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, Lovely Bones, The House of the Scorpion, LOTR series, Swim The Fly, The Bell Jar, Under the Banner of Heaven, and the Percy Jackson series.

Sport: Swimming is the only thing I can do without falling all over myself. Because...you know. You're in water.

Movie: Finding Nemo (just keep swimming, just keep swimming), Slumdog Millionare, UP, Titanic, Harry Potter, and Memento. Anything Pixar.

TV Show: Teen Titans, Glee, anything on Discovery Channel, DWTS, That 70's Show, What I Like About You, Degrassi, and Spongebob.

Biggest Fear: To be severely embarrassed.

Biggest Wish: To be on Oprah. Seriously.

Rules I LIVE by:

1. I am a vegan. I will forever think that, come the choice between saving animals and humans, animals should be picked hands down. The human race has turned them into slaves, into what they were never meant to be. I think that is so incredibly wrong it's almost sickening. I am an animal rights activist, above all else.

2. I will forver and always think that Harry Potter is better than Twilight. Not only that, I think almost any book is better than Twilight. Twilight's characters are shallow and have no personality, apart from their love lives. The book is repetitive and is written by an author who seems to think criticism is beyond her. I won't go on, because I could go on all day, but I am very willing to have a NICE debate over why it's a horrible book. insert evil laugh here

3. No one has ever been a better friend than Joanna. She's my bestest bud! I lurvs you, Jo! And a shoutout to all the other people in the world that made me smile!

4. I write. It is my life and my deepest love, and I don't know how to live without it. I'm not bad, but I'm not horrible either. I'm hoping I'll progress with time... Because, you know, I'm really only fourteen, only half the time I believe I'm twenty.

5. I'm agnostic. I think organized religion is amazing in that it inspires faith in the world like nothing could, but the wars and deaths created as a result of relgion have left me feeling that it's quite a bad thing at times. My personal belief is in reincarnation, and angels, and God somewhere. Evolution is real, people, sorry. If I could choose any religion to belong to, it would be Buddhism. Because who doesn't want to rub Buddha's belly?

Quotes

Harry Potter

Harry Potter isn't everything, but it's right up there wth oxygen.

"Imagine losing fingernails! That really puts our sufferings into perspective, doesn't it?" -Hermione

(After being asked what Ron's dream of Quidditch meant) "Probably that you're going to get eaten by a giant marshmallow or something." ~Harry

"Proud?" said Harry. "Are you crazy? All those times I could've died, and I didn't manage it? They'll be furious..."

"But why's she got to go to the library?"
"Because that's what Hermione does," said Ron, shrugging. "When in doubt, go to the library."

(Harry, just being greeted by Percy) "Harry!" said Fred, elbowing Percy out of the way and bowing deeply. "Simply splendid to see you, old boy-"
"Marvelous," said George, pushing Fred aside and seizing Harry's hand in turn. "Absolutely spiffing." Percy scowled.
"That's enough, now," said Mrs. Weasley.
"Mum!" said Fred as though he'd only just spotted her and seized her hand too. "How really corking to see you-"

Ron: "I could've taken those mer-idiots any time I wanted."
Hermione: "What were you going to do, snore at them?"

"I've got two Neptunes here," said Harry after a while, frowning down at his piece of parchment, "that can't be right, can it?"
"Aaaaah," said Ron, imitating Professor Trelawney's mystical whisper, "when two Neptunes appear in the sky, it is a sure sign that a midget in glasses is being born, Harry..."

"His life's ambition is to have his head cut off and stuck up on a plaque like his mother," said Ron. "Is that normal, Hermione?"

"Not this brave at night, are you?" sneered Dudley.
"This is night, Diddykins. That's what we call it when it goes all dark like this."

"There's no need to call me 'sir,' Professor."

"Hermione, will you shut up? You're not the only one who's nervous!" barked Ron. "And when you've got your eleven 'Outstanding OWLs...'"
"Don't, don't, don't!" said Hermione, flapping her hands hysterically. "I know I've failed everything!"

"Er-well-ghosts are transparent-" he said
"Oh, very good," interrupted Snape, his lip curling. "Yes, it is easy to see that nearly six years of magical education have not been wasted on you, Potter. Ghosts are transparent."

Ron, you know full well Harry and I were brought up by Muggles!” said Hermione. “We didn’t hear stories like that when we were little, we heard ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ and ‘Cinderella’—“
“What’s that, an illness?” asked Ron.

"Oh, of course," said Ron, clapping a hand to his forehead. "I forgot we'll be hunting down Voldemort in a mobile library."

“No,” said Harry. “I’m definitely not thinking of Gorgovitch.
“I try not to either,” said Ron.

There was a clatter as the baskilisk fangs cascaded out of Hermione's arms. Running at Ron, she flung them around his neck and kissed him full on the mouth. Ron threw away the fangs and broomstick he was holding and responded with such enthusiasm that he lifted Hermione off her feet.
"Is this the moment?" Harry asked weakly, and the when nothing happened except that Ron and Hermione gripped each other still more firmly and swayed on the spot, he raised his voice. "OI! There's a war going on here!"
Ron and Hermione broke apart, their arms still around each other.
"I know mate," said Ron who looked as though he had recently been hit on the back of the head with a bludger, "so it's now or never, isn't it?"

Hermione slid out of her bunk and moved like a sleepwalker toward Ron, her eyes upon his pale face. She stopped right in front of him, her lips slightly parted, her eyes wide. Ron gave a weak, hopeful smile and half raised his arms.
Hermione launched herself forward and started punching every inch of him that she could reach.
"Ouch - ow - geroff! What the - ? Hermione - OW!"
"You - complete - arse - Ronald - Weasley!"
She punctuated every word with a blow: Ron backed away, shielding his head as Hermione advanced.
"You - crawl - back - here - after - weeks - and - weeks - oh, where's my wand?"

Teen Titans

Beast Boy: Told ya we'll win you a prize.
Raven: A giant chicken. I must be the luckiest girl in the world.

Dr. Light: No one defeats Dr. Light! No one!
Raven: (Appears behind Dr. Light) Remember me?
Dr. Light: (looking mortified) I'd like to go to jail now, please!

Robin: You're getting married?
Starfire: Indeed, and I cannot wait to Tamaran. I have been having a bit of the sick-home feeling lately, and am eager to introduce my home planet to you, my friends.
Robin: You're getting married?
Raven: Yeah, anyone we know?
Starfire: I have never met him. My betrothed has been chosen for me by the Grand Ruler of Tamaran.
Robin: You're getting MARRIED? And to SOMEONE YOU'VE NEVER MET!?

Cyborg: Is there any meat in that tofu?
Beast Boy: No, there's no meat in the tofu, it's TOFU!

(Beast Boy and Cyborg are fighting, trying to fnid the remote control)
Cyborg: Man, how am I supposed to watch TV without the remote?!
Raven: (angry) Simple... you just get up, and change the channel.
(pause)
Cyborg: Don't even joke like that.
Raven: I wasn't joking.
Cyborg: Good. 'Cause it's not funny.

Starfire: (to Robin, who is on a self-deprecating rant) No more Robin yelling at Robin!

Beast Boy: I may not be smart enough to know everything, but I'm dumb enough to try anything.

Cyborg: (infected with a computer virus) I know what we should do! Let's go get some waffles! Raven you like waffles, don't you?
Raven: (deadpan) More than life itself.

Starfire: Cyborg, you seem all lobstery.
(everyone looks at her strangely)
Raven: I think she means crabby

Starfire: (while holding three strips of tofu bacon to her head) Observe. I am a Rorphian Zopgar.
(she giggles. Cyborg and Beast Boy give her blank looks)
Starfire: On my planet, this is hilarious.

Raven: Will you please stop talking like that?

.Beastboy (with a british accent): You're just jealous because I sound like a rock star.

Writing Quotes:

Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass. ~Anton Chekhov

A perfectly healthy sentence, it is true, is extremely rare. For the most part we miss the hue and fragrance of the thought; as if we could be satisfied with the dews of the morning or evening without their colors, or the heavens without their azure. ~Henry David Thoreau

A good style should show no signs of effort. What is written should seem a happy accident. ~W. Somerset Maugham

As for my next book, I am going to hold myself from writing it till I have it impending in me: grown heavy in my mind like a ripe pear; pendant, gravid, asking to be cut or it will fall. ~Virginia Woolf

I am a man, and alive... For this reason I am a novelist. And being a novelist, I consider myself superior to the saint, the scientist, the philosopher, and the poet, who are all great masters of different bits of man alive, but never get the whole hog. ~D.H. Lawrence, preface to Shestov

Write your first draft with your heart. Re-write with your head. ~From the movie Finding Forrester

An author in his book must be like God in the universe, present everywhere and visible nowhere. ~Gustave Flaubert

You could compile the worst book in the world entirely out of selected passages from the best writers in the world. ~G.K. Chesterton

The two most engaging powers of an author are to make new things familiar and familiar things new. ~Samuel Johnson
