Author has written 59 stories for Lord of the Rings, Jedi Apprentice, Star Wars, Chronicles of Narnia, Meet the Robinsons, Ranger's Apprentice, Harry Potter, How to Train Your Dragon, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Doctor Who, Squire's Tales, Gerald Morris, and Merlin.

ATTENTION:

Well, if you've been around my profile lately, you'll notice that I've changed the 'attention' message. I am, in fact, returning to the FF world out of hibernation. It wasn't really a deliberate action, but I've been updating more often lately and I supposed I shouldn't say that I'm going away when I'm not. However, don't get the idea that I'll be on here a whole lot with continuous updates, because I am currently attending my first semester at university. I am loving college life, but unfortunately, it leaves me with little free time between classes and studying and, of course, napping. I may not update as much as I used to, but rest assured I am checking regularly and writing when I can. I absolutely love messages, so even if it has nothing to do with fanfic at all, feel free to drop me a PM.

It's good to be back, and just a quick shoutout to all my readers: Y'all are awesome. Well and truly. I write for my own enjoyment, to be honest, but it's great when you find other people who like it as much as you do. Keep being amazing!

-Elfpen

Well hello, there! Thanks for dropping by! I'll go ahead and do some self advertising and say: Don't forget to check out my stories! And leave a review if you like what you read! (And even if you don't. A good ol' flame never fails to give me a chuckle or two.) And I also have a fun new poll up to vote on. So, if you know the Ranger's Apprentice books and frequent the archive enough to know what the poll is talking about, I would b much obliged if you'd drop by and vote. Thanks!

You can also find me on DeviantArt and FictionPress under the same username.

Also, the loverly icon that you see to your left was drawn by the wondermous ~Atlantistel at DeviantArt. Thanks, Atlan!

Now that that's out of the way, I'll tell you a bit about myself.

I'm a devout, well-informed Christian, who knows what I believe and why I believe it. I thrive on my Lord Jesus Christ, and am never afraid to say so. I revel in true art, beauty, and eloquence - just a few of the values that the vast majority of the modern world has let go of. I am not afraid to think critically and read carefully, taking every thought captive (1 Cor 10:5) so that I may not only know, but by God's grace, understand. I am human, I am real, and I make mistakes (quite a few, actually) but I have a purpose and a hope in the future. I'm still learning, and I'm definitely still growing. I am not perfect, and I never will be.

And, as you've probably already guessed, I love to write.

I started writing stories when I was in the fifth grade, and while I don't think that three-page short stories on alien abductions and villainous school teachers count for much, it was a start. In the sixth grade, I attempted to write my first structured, multi-chapter story. If memory serves, it was a detective story inspired by the Nancy Drew obsession that I was going through. After that, I experimented with a few short stories, and tried my hand at song writing. (which, in case you were wondering, I am certifiably horrible at) I wrote my first fanfiction, 'Are You My Uncle?' in the eighth grade, and after I finally got around to getting an account here on FF.net in the ninth grade, published it here.

I go through 'phases' of obsession over different books/movies, and it is reflected in my writing. You'll find that my earliest stories concern Lord of the Rings, and I went through a huge Star Wars Pre-Saga obsession when I was 14-16, and you'll find many fics from that genre in my repertoire. While I look back on most of them and cringe in embarrassment at the lacking plots and totally disgusting characterizations, I leave them untouched to stand as they are, so I can look back and see how my writing has changed over the years and continue on improving.

As of late, I have been completely immersed in the world of Ranger's Apprentice. The characters, the world, the plots, the style... All of it is utterly fascinating to me. And while it has a rather small fan base, it is one of the best - no, the best - young adult fiction series that I have ever read to date. Believe me when I say that I've been around the block of teen fiction for a while. Ranger's Apprentice is my primary base of fanfiction these days, and while I dabble around in other fandoms such as How to Train Your Dragon and Harry Potter very occasionally, I'll probably be sticking with Ranger's Apprentice for a while, now.

Also, after reading 'The Lost Hero' over the holidays, I've fallen back into a Percy Jackson high. Though I have only posted fanfiction for PJO recently, I've loved the books for years. In fact, I'm pretty sure I read the Percy Jackson books well before I even touched the Ranger's Apprentice books. Anyway, I hadn't read them for some time until Christmas, when I got the first Heroes of Olympus book. I am now re-reading the series. I cannot wait until 'The Son of Neptune' comes out, and the realization that I will be a freshman in college before I can buy it makes me incredibly sad. The realization that I'll be a senior in college before the series is finished makes me even sadder. *sigh* Oh well. Until then, I will content myself with writing pointless PJO fanfiction.

Of course, though fanfiction is fun and I will always enjoy it, I can't really claim any of it as my own, as the characters and worlds are the property of the authors who created them. In many ways, writing fanfiction is just my training ground for original fiction. I practice my writing skills here on FanFiction, but my serious work belongs either on my hard drive filed under 'original fiction' or possibly published on my account over at FictionPress. I participated in my first NaNoWriMo in 2010, and while I didn't finish (no where close!) I am continuing work on it, as I enjoy the plot and characters. Hopefully, I'll get some more original work on FictionPress soon. It's been a childhood dream of mine to become a published author one day, and while I don't think I'd ever be able to write for a living, I enjoy it as a hobby.

I'm am unsure how much longer I will be able to steadily write fanfiction and keep updating my stories. I graduate from High School in the spring, and I'll be headed off to college in less than a year. (scary thought!) I love nothing more than reading and writing fanfiction and sharing it with other authors, but I may be having trouble with it in the near future. So, if anyone out there sends me a PM and doesn't get a quick response, or is left waiting for ages for an update, I am terribly sorry! Life happens to everyone. If you're a student, life happens at light speed.

Elfpen's Top Ten Fanfiction Pet Peeves:

#1. Slash. You want to hear my tirade? Do you really? Feel free to ask me anytime, and I'll give it to you. However, hostile words are useless on these types of profiles, so I'll put it as frankly and concisely as I can: Homosexuality is disgusting. It really, really is. Unnatural, impractical, and gross, and it doesn't work on any level of imagination. Am I a homophobe*? No. I just happen to hold the belief that any romantic relationship should exist between a man and a woman, not two people of the same gender. Now, that being said, don't think I'll tear you up, down, left and right if you happen to enjoy slash. I won't. I have several friends who are mildly obsessed with slash. I don't like it that they are, nor do I condone their reading/writing of it, but that doesn't mean I hate them for it - they're good friends of mine. I hate slash, not slash-loving people. (*Personally, I never understood why people even use the term 'homophobe'. I mean, really, you might as well call a homosexual person a 'heterophobe'. The whole thing is rather redundant.)

#2. Bad grammar, punctuation and spelling. I mean, really, can you not figure out how to use a spellchecker? If everything else fails, just put your story into google, and it'll correct it for you. I can understand typos, as I end up leaving a good amount of them in my stories. I can even understand if you have trouble writing in English because it's your second language. (I've betaed for a few ESL students before) But honestly, if you were born and raised in an English-speaking country and somehow passed elementary school, I expect you to know whether to use an exclamation point or a question mark. Your≠You're, Their≠There≠They're. Got it? Get it? Good. Moving on.

#3. Mary Sues. Ah, the good ol' Sue. Who doesn't hate her? The ones who write about her, of course. Unfortunately, she and her army of clones take on a whole cast of disguises, but usually she takes the shape of an unrealistically perfect and/or attractive girl who is strangely absent from the world of canon. Those who propagate her likeness into various fandoms usually adhere to the rules of 'English' referred to in Pet Peeve #2. Oh, and let us not forget her lesser known brother, Marty Sam. He and his clones are, luckily, not as invasive as his sister and her army of obscurely long-named wonder-women, but he is just about as annoying as his sister. He is also known as Gary-Stu.

#4. Dark Fics. Oh, the drama. Oh, the angst. Oh, the totally out-of-character characters. Just dunk them in a vat of heavy eyeliner and paint their fingernails black, why don't you? Unless the character is canonically 'dark' to begin with (Like, say, Nico di Angelo from Rick Riordan's 'Percy Jackson' series) they don't need to be converted into the alternative-universe world of angsty angst-ness. Enough said.

#5. Death fics. Okay, this one is only a partial peeve. If you have a well-thought out alternative-universe (or 'AU') fic where a canon character gets killed off in a dubious (or not so dubious) circumstance, and you have a logical and reasonable outcome for this premise, then that's awesome. I've read several of these, and enjoyed them quite a lot. (Albeit I cried through most of them) But if you've just decided to write a death-fic oneshot to kill of the main character for absolutely no reason... Just... Why? These never cease to get on my nerves.

#6. 'Bad summaries'. Who hasn't been scrolling through their favorite archive and come across the ever-enduring tack-on: "Better summary inside"? Seriously, just think about this one for a second here. You've written a fanfiction - presumably with words - and yet you cannot figure out a way to write a decent summary to put your story under? Is this supposed to encourage me to read your story? If you can't make a couple-hundred character long summary to work, then what is supposed to imply that you can write a story in the first place? Now, 'Full summary inside' tack-ons, I understand. I've used them a couple times. Sometimes, a story's summary is too long for FF.net regulations. But really, seriously... 'Better summary'? If you have a 'better summary' inside, why isn't it outside, too?

#7. One liner reviews. Now, don't get me wrong, I jump for joy every time I get a review in my inbox, regardless of length. But sometimes, when all I get is a colon-close parenthesis smiley face, (and it's happened to me before) I get a little disappointed. Even a 'good job, I loved [insert character name here] in this fic' would have been nice. It really, honestly dosen't take much effort to type a sentence. No, really.

#8. Two alerts, two favorites, but not a single review. Every author friend of mine knows exactly what I'm talking about: Some mysterious FF.net reader subscribes to your story alert and your author alert, and they favorite you as an author and the story that they love so much, but they can't be bothered to tell you that they liked it so much in a review. Refer to #7: It doesn't take that long to type a sentence or two. (No, seriously.)

#9. Crack fics. Sometimes referred to as 'ultra-parodies'. Crack fics are fics that are so disgustingly random and out of character that the author is assumed to have been taking crack cocaine whilst writing said story. I, admittedly, enjoy a parody from time to time. They can be humorous, if done correctly. But in my line of thinking, I do not believe that there is any permissible rhyme or reason to writing a crack fic. Cross-dressing rangers? Helium-breathing elves? Cake-eating horses? Oh, the retinal scarring! Just... Don't write it. If you're at all serious about being an author, you'll look back one day and hang your head in shame. No one wants that. Please, spare us all.

#10. Last and definitely most least: flamer ignorance. In all honesty, some flames are very readily deserved. Some flames are meaningful. Some flames are even useful to the author. But some flames - no, let me rephrase that, most flames, are a result of ignorance and self-centered-ness. If you're going to take the time to write out a harsh criticism or 'flame', at least take the time to, oh, you know, read the story beforehand. That way, you'll at least look like an informed flamer, rather than an ignorant one. However, even if you did read the story, most flamers flame for no good reason anyway. Ultra-control freaks, power-cravers, attention-seekers, people-bashers; flamers. Whatever you'd like to call them, they're about as funny as they are annoying. As the popular meme goes, 'Haters gonna hate'.

"Even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original: whereas if you simply try to tell the truth (without caring twopence how often it has been told before) you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it." - C. S. Lewis

"A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic - on the level with a man who says he is a poached egg - or he would be the devil of hell. You must take your choice. Either this was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us." - C.S. Lewis

"It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo, the ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn't want to know the end, because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was after so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's just a passing thing, this shadow; even darkness must pass. A new day will come, and when the sun shines, it'll shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you, that meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now: Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something: There is some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for." - Samewise Gamgee, The Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers (J.R.R. Tolkien)

"It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known." - Sydney Carton, A Tale of Two Cities, (Charles Dickens)

"A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool." - William Shakespeare
