Author has written 33 stories for Labyrinth, Weiss Kreuz, Harry Potter, Final Fantasy VII, Pirates of the Caribbean, Transformers, Heroes, Fallout, and Alice in Wonderland, 2010. Been writing fanfiction since 1999 and in my head much longer than that. (And yes, I do cringe at some of my older stuff.) Note: Old (Pre-2006) works-in-progress will not be finished, barring a miracle. I apologize if you were waiting for a conclusion. Sadly, I see them often enough in fanfiction that I wish to make a comment. Author's notes in the middle of a story. I've seen them in scene breaks and I've seen them slap-dash in the middle of a paragraph. Please don't do this. A note in the middle of a story disrupts the flow and makes the reader disengage. Author's notes belong at the beginning of a story or chapter or at the end (if you want to explain why you did something without giving the game away). Incorrect Irregular Verbs. I have seen fanfic authors use "thrusted." This is not a word. I have seen fanfic authors use "grinded." This is not a word. These are irregular verbs that don't follow standard conjugation. The simple past and past participle of "thrust" is: thrust. The simple past and past participle of "grind" is: ground. Some irregular verbs are trickier than others (some of them just look plain weird, which makes you wonder if you're using the word correctly), but there are many grammar resources out there to help identify some of these irregular verbs. Such as: http://www.englishpage.com/irregularverbs/irregularverbs.html. If in doubt? Look up the word. Or find another one. (I'd suggest the latter particularly if you're thinking of using "thrust" or "ground" in a sexual context as they're both incredibly overused.) Irregardless. It's a word. But so is "fuhgeddaboudit." "Irregardless" isn't a good word or a correct one. If you're using it, you're probably looking for "regardless" or "irrespective." These words are better, cleaner, and more effective in your writing. Unless you're having a character, in dialogue, use "irregardless" because the character is prone to use incorrect words/grammar, please stay away from this mutant. | |||||||
