Today's Random Thought: How did butterflies get their name?

Seriously, why the heck are they called butterflies? In what way does a small, winged insect actually look appetizing enough that someone would name it after a dairy product? Do they actually taste like butter? Did someone just sit down one day and say, "Hey, I wonder what one of those little fluttering things tastes like," and then pop one in his mouth, only to find that it tastes exactly like butter? Maybe there are only a select few who know about its magnificent taste, and they don't tell anyone about it because they want to keep all the butterflies to themselves. Or maybe there's a secret organization that can only be entered by someone who has eaten a butterfly, and this organization drops subtle hints around like naming them butterflies and naming certain species of butterflies after different foods. What kind of things would those people do all day? Would they just sit around, eat some butterflies, and argue about why the pizza butterflies are better than the broccoli ones? Or do these people only meet at mealtimes and serve lavishly seasoned butterfly stew? Or do the males go out hunting butterfly herds while the women forage for salt, pepper, and steak sauce? Do these butterfly hunters follow the butterflies when they migrate? 'Cause I've heard most butterflies do migrate. Or do they domesticate the butterflies? This really is an interesting thought.

Well, wasn't that nice? You know, there's one way to find out for sure if these theories are right. Just go out there, follow a butterfly around, maybe spread some nectar on your arm, wait for it to land on you, and then... well, one can only imagine.
