July 02 2009: There will be no updates to Best Kept Secret until around July 15 or July 18th. I need time to work on a few other things first. I have overdue requests and I want to advance much more on Broken Wings and The Vacuous Heart of Blood. If you haven't checked those fictions out, please do so, they are my babies. ~Part 2: About Me~

Hey, MoonStarDutchess here and welcome to my profile. Thank you so much for dropping by. Since you’ve taken the time to come to my page, I hope it’s safe to assume that you want to know a bit about me, yes? All right then, that I can tell you. I’m not very knowledgeable in things like physics or philosophy but I do know myself better than anyone.

First of all, you can call me MSD. I don't know who came up with this abbreviated form but it has caught on.

I am in my mid 20's and I've been publishing fanfiction on this site for a little over three years. In that time, I've notice my writing has come a long way. I've seen people come and go, made friends, gotten in arguments, gotten flamed, you name it. All in all, I love the majority of the people that I've spoken to on this site.

I love talking with people so if you want to talk via messenger or even just PM don't hesitate to drop me a line. My Yahoo Messenger is: christinealliehatfield@yahoo.com. If I forget who you are please don't take offense. I have a lot of people on my Yahoo Messenger List. Please tell me where you came from. For instance ff.net of course if you came from this site.

~Part 3: Writing Views~

1. Write what you want! Go with your gut. You have a right to write whatever you want. No one can tell you how to write. Just be sure to use your brain when you write something. Some serious topics out there need research and shouldn't be glorified the way they are in some fictions.

2. If you come across something you know you won't like then don't read it and then review saying you don't like it. Just keep away from it, that way you will spare the writer from bitching you out over being an idiot. Why waste time reading something you know you won't enjoy.

3. Don't expect everyone to write like you. I don't know how many reviews I've gotten saying, "I would have done it this way," or "You should have done it this way." What would be the point in writing if you had to write the way everyone else wanted you to. It's your story, write the way you want and people who review like this, please remember that you wouldn't want someone telling you how to write either. Part of the joy of reading is not knowing what the writer has planned next.

4. You are going to get flamed eventually, you will get critiqued both roughly and gently. It's hard at first but then you deal and move on. It's up to you whether you feel the critique is worth paying attention to. There is a difference between flaming and constructive criticism and once you get one of each you will know it.

5. If you want people to read your stories...ASK! Seriously, I don't mind if people ask in a review for me to read their fiction as long as it is something I can tolerate (pairing/fandom) wise. Just don't let that be all the review is about. Actually read and review the story then ask. There's nothing wrong with it. If you want more reviews, want people to help you, then just ask. It might annoy some but a publish author once told me the only way to get is to ask. Just don't be high horsey about it.

6. Don't hold your chapters hostage for reviews. That will turn people off quicker than anything. What I mean by hostage is when people say, "Three reviews and I'll post next chapter." You are forcing people to review and that's not right. I used to do it when I was a big Noob until the love of writing hit me. Ask people nicely to review, do something witty in asking, ask opinions, questions. Don't disrespect your readers.

~Part 4: CRITIQUE~

I like helping people if they feel I can but I don't have time to beta anything. Once in a while if I see a grammar mistake or a way that a story can flow better or a problem with tenses or point of view I will mention it but other than that I don't go into heavy critique unless the author thinks I have the skill to do so. It's not my place to criticize the way an author chooses to characterize or the author's plot. So I WILL NOT judge a story from the way I would write it. The reason for my view is that I choose to make my characters more human, I want to think about how I think they'll react in a specific situation. Unless its completely outlandish, (Like Riza crying over a broken nail without a valid reason) I don't believe that is the place to give critique. We all see characters very differently.

If you are going to critique, then critique grammar, flatness, point of view, word usage and so on. Please don't make your entire review an edit to a story. I know it is discouraging to many writers.

I really hate this situation the most: Say I write a story about Riza coping with a situation and then someone comes along and says, "I like this but you make Roy this way and you should make him this way." Or someone criticizing me for not writing more about Roy's feelings in a specific situation. That's because my plot idea didn't revolve around Roy. If it did, I would write. Anytime someone writes something that doesn't inspire them then the story turns out flat.

Oh, and I can't forget about the people that think they are giving a critique when really they want the story their way. Like, they read your story then give you a review saying, Riza should have done this instead of this and you should have had this take place there and should have named the minor character this instead of this. In effect they want you to change your entire story around and basically use all of their preferences. That's not constructive criticisms . If you want to have a story your way then write one. Respect the author's ideas.
