Destiny's Calling 'verse Stories in Destiny's Calling 'verse One Big Happily Awkward Family - mentioned mpreg // slash What Time Hath Wrought - TUE-equivalent for AU 'verse // mentioned mpreg // character death // slash Reproduction Theory In Destiny's Calling Reproduction in this story/universe is a bit...convoluted. It doesn't matter what 'gender' you display or if the pairing is 'hetero' or 'homo' sexual. In a hetero pairing the guy can get pregnant instead of the girl, it all depends on certain factors... First of all in determining mother or father of any ghostly parent you have to look at base power levels. The ghost with the most raw power is automatically the father. This is because the father is expected to protect its pregnant mate in the later months of pregnancy, and is expected to protect its young and mate after birth. Conversely the mother is the ghost with more control meaning they have less raw power than their mate, but they have a greater control of what power they do have. The reason for the greater control is simply because the mother is the ghost who will teach their children how to use their powers, and will be the ghost to 'extract' the child from its protective sac. The mother will also be expected to contain any untoward accidents the developing child may have, and will, during gestation and growth of the pregnancy, be feeding controlled amounts of their own ectoplasm to the ectoplasmic sac, including taking amounts of ectoplasmic energy from their mates and feeding it to the child. The Ectoplasmic Sac Pregnancy between two pairs happens directly after the first copulation. It's an almost instantaneous response. For this reason ghosts do not have sex with multiple partners or have anything such as a quickie or whatnot. The exchange of energies created during sex automatically forms the ectoplasmic sac. The ectoplasmic sac is a glowing green ball of ectoplasmic energy. It is very durable and connected to the mother by a thin, but extremely hard to destroy, umbilical cord. A child forms outside the mother in the ectoplasmic sac and is only visible by family members of the mother and father ghost. While pregnant, like a human pregnancy, the mother will go through a phase of 'morning sickness' which happens during the first few months of forming. This is because the mother is not used to the draw on his or her energy, and thus makes them sick. The 'morning sickness' can include either throwing up of food (if the ghost partakes in such, which many of the Zone do because it is a form of quick energy) or throwing up of raw ectoplasm (very rare and very dangerous) Throughout the pregnancy the mother will exhibit emotional distress and moodswings, cravings for random food or cravings for sex (the proferred method of energy transfer/energy gaining), increased girth due to the amount of excess energy (the mother has to increase energy intake levels for the child and themselves). At the ending phase of the pregnancy (around ten to twelve months) the mother will grow weary or tired and, when the child is ready to be birthed, the mother will fall asleep for up to three days to a week. When they awaken they will immediately have to cut the umbilical cord, which will have weakened enough to be cut by the mothers energy only. Once the umbilical cord is removed the ectoplasmic sac will degenerate. The father should be present to hold the newborn and the sac during the cutting, otherwise the baby may collapse to the ground and perish. Most child deaths happen because of this lack of attendance. On Miscarriage or Abortion it is important to understand that the ectoplasmic sac is very strong and does not damage easily. However the easiest way for a miscarriage or abortion to happen is to physically damage the mother enough that they cannot risk giving any more energy to the child lest they kill themselves and the child. In this case their instincts will take over and they will view the forming child as a threat to their continued existence, as a leech upon their energy, and end the threat. They will cut off all energy flow to the ectoplasmic sac and attempt to sever the umbilical cord shortly thereafter. Most mothers die in a miscarriage or abortion due to overextending what little energy they do have in getting rid of the child. For this reason the father is vastly overprotective of its pregnant mate and will do anything to make sure they are not damaged to that point. An abortion is rarely if ever attempted because of the high death rate of the mother. It is also the reason why most ghosts do not have sex unless they are certain that they want a child. After the first pregnancy and first copulation to impregnate the mother again is significantly harder and takes much more time and effort. Needless hours of either constant copulation or continually days of copulation, one after another, will not even create a dent in how much energy is required for a second, third or forth pregnancy. In fact it is suggested to have years of constant sexual contact if the ghost parents wish to try for another child, as it will take years for the energy levels to reach a peak after pregnancy. Usually a second or third pregnancy will happen after the first child has matured enough to survive entirely on its own. This can be between ten to fifty years. Average is around thirty years. There you go. All you need to know about this family, and ghostly reproduction in the Destiny's Calling universe.
