|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Just your average fan geek. Had a passion for writing since I was 16 and reading a lot longer. Everything I know has either been learned through experience, or shared by other kind readers.
Generally you can expect me to pay attention to things like plot and character consistences. If something seems a bit odd or totally out of flow, I'll be pointing out what I feel as a reader doesn't seem to work. I might make the odd fix of misspelled words or some that might have been accidentally put in by spell check. These I'll give notice on in my feedback. I will share what I liked, did not like followed with suggestions on how (I feel) it can be improved.
If you want to follow said advice, that's up to you. I'm just offering opinions to anyone who wants one. And I do enjoy reading other peoples works.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I like to think I've become really good at describing scenes, setting up a mood, or keeping the pace of a story going. Also I tend to obsess over original characters, and go out of my way to try and give them all as unique a life as possible.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My mind has this amazing ability to not make itself up. I can spend anywhere from minutes to half an hour on a single sentence going over ways it could be better, worse or starting over. Also the aforementioned editing. I tend to overlook even the most blatantly obvious of errors, as my subconsciouses fills in the blanks for me.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
Pretty much anything anthropomorphic I'd be willing to give a look at; Star Fox, Sly Cooper, even Ratchet & Clank. And if you can even present them as furries and not just humans in fur, I might fall in love with you...well, maybe not.
Not to say I won't look at anything else. I really enjoy adventure and humor stories in general. Everything else is kind of a situational thing, just ask.
And if there's a transformation in it somewhere, you'll have my undivided attention. A fine example of this would be The Last Dragon under the Star Fox section. One of my favorite reads on this site.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I like to overlook even the most redundant of clichés (Krystal's long lost sibling anyone?) and give a story a chance. It just needs two simple things: THOUGHT and REASON. What I mean by that is:
Don't have your original character meet a main persona, sway them, and suddenly have each other exchanging eternal vows of love IN THE SAME CHAPTER THEY ARE INTRODUCED. Spend some time getting to know each other, create some conflict, build a little character. No one likes Mary or Sue. Besides, if people were that easy to sway, I'd have a girlfriend!
Another thing that'll make me drop a story is the random plot twists. Stuff happens for a reason, especially when it's as dramatic as a playstation blowing up and our heroes find themselves in the world of [insert game title here]. It gets even more baffling when a reason is never so much as hinted on, but the characters suffer a case of amnesia and never ponders it. Don't just give hollow support to the plot, make events relevant to it.
