|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
As a beta reader, I attempt to focus mainly on the issues the author has most prominently. If you have difficulties with word usage, I'll focus more on context and definitions, if you have problems with sentence stucture, I'll focus on that. I will attempt to not neglect the other areas of your writing, I'll simply focus on what you have the most difficulty with.
I am more a beta for those who are improving their skills rather than those who have reached a plateau in their writing ability. My style includes highlighting the perceived problem, then following with an explanation of the issue plus a suggestion to fix it. If I see something you've done well, I'll also highlight and follow that up with a compliment or explanation of why it was well done. I do not, repeat, do not, and will never, correct mistakes for you without your consent and understanding. The writing is to be your writing, not mine.
My expectations of the author who sends in the request is that they don't hand me a pile of gibberish and ask me to fix the multiple spelling errors that can be done DIY style in about twenty minutes using dictionary.com or a simple spell check. I am pretty flexible otherwise; I care not what skill level you're at as long as you are focusing on improving. Finally, I offer my services on a completely professional level. You ask me to beta your work, I will criticize, I will also compliment. I am not out to harm your ego, I am out to improve your work.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My strengths lie in keeping the dialogue in character, correcting word usage and correcting detail flaws. When I beta, I pay attention to detail, I am much more likely to miss a big plot flaw than I am to miss a setting or description flaw. My strength also lies in focusing on a problem previously specified as an issue. Got a problem with homonyms, you're going to have so many there, they're and their's stuffed up your ass - well, I'll just stop there. Long story short, detail and specified issues are my strengths.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
With my strength lying in detail, my weakness lies in the big picture. When my mind turns critical, I tend to focus on the words I'm reading only, and I do not retain any knowledge from the passages I've already corrected. By finishing a paragraph, I assume that it is wholesome and complete. There are time I will catch flaws in between consecutive paragraphs, but usually not more than that unless it has something to do with general design. Plot is foreign to me, I will only pay more than a minute bit of attention to plot if you ask me to because it is one of your weaknesses (in which case, I will be more likely to miss things I normally would not since I would be focusing on plot). Long story shot, my major weakness is seeing the big picture in a story, beyond the general 'character lives here, character lost wife, character goes on killing rampage, dies in end.'
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I'm fairly flexible when it comes to beta-ing stories. It would be beneficial to you to keep your stories under the categories of Naruto, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Sweeney Todd as those are the ones I know the most about. Stories can also include Lord of the Rings, most of the Johnny Depp movies, the Sabriel trilogy, and the Charlie Bone series.
As for genre, I am, once again, flexible. I would enjoy the work more if I were to read non-pairing gen fics, but I can tolerate small amounts of romance. NO SMUT, PLEASE. I believe smut is to stay ... unedited. Pun definitely intended.
The author would most benefit from requesting betaing for stories that stick to my home turf preferences for READING fanfiction, such as action/adventure, usually sticks to a focus on one character, generally limited omniscient view ...
A hint - I am a SUCKER for 10th walker stories for Lord of the Rings. Got one, and want me to beta, and are not likely to cannonball on me after the first chapter? Gimme gime GIMME. Like, no line up for you.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
... I believe I already specified SMUT as a no go. Pathetic wishy washing uke/seme yaoi crap where one character is a weak little biyotch while the other is a demigod of strength ... no. No. Slash is fine ... but not weak/strong pairings. Using each other as a pillar of strength in hard times is cool and all, but ... I don't want to read about a weak little boy who has to cling to his signifigant others fricking ass to go to the washroom ...
I'll stop ranting. No smut, no yaoi. Thank you.
