|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I have been betareading for years; just not fanfiction. Me and my friends like to write for fun, and we look over each other's work. I also have a BA in English. My style is to correct grammar and put suggestions or comments into aside commas. I like to highlight changes I make so that the writer I'm betareading for can see what I changed and decide for theirself whether they want to keep my changes or suggestions, or change it back to how it was (and so that hopefully the writer can learn from my corrections).
I also generally give some constructive criticism at the end of everything (and sometimes within the work itself in parentheses). This means I will say where the story needs work and everything that I've found that I didn't like. I also try to include what I do like about it. I try to be polite about it either way.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am particularly good at re-wording awkward sentences. If English isn't your first language I can also go over your piece and make it sound more natural to native readers (particularly American readers). My other talents surround character and plot development.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I would likely be no good at all with sex scenes (though I won't refuse a work just because there happens to be sex in it...I just wouldn't be the best person to beta that section). I'm also bad about research, so if you want someone to check and make sure nothing contradicts canon, or that your scene concerning science terms or medical jargon all makes sense, don't choose me. I will tell you if I notice something is off with what knowledge I do possess, but otherwise find someone familiar with what you need checked. (you can still use me for everything else, just have someone else look at it too. There's nothing wrong with having more than one beta, we aren't infallible or omnipotent).
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I prefer fanfiction in genres I am familiar with that centers around the main characters of that genre. For instance, if I'm reading Harry Potter fanfiction, I prefer that fanfiction to be about Harry with him as the main character. That said, I have nothing against AU's, or the presence of original characters, so long as they don't become overly important, taking over the story and displacing important canon characters. I don't mind slash (or het, or gen). My favorites are hurt/comfort stories and mentor stories (such as the infamous Severitus, or Little Danny with Jack guardian Stargate stories). I also like romance so long as there is enough plot behind it.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
As I've said, I'd be horrible with sex scenes. Stories that are nothing but would definitely not go well with me. I don't like Mary Sues, original characters that take over the story, or extreme out-of-characters (if you feel the need to go on at length about Harry's new wardrobe and new attitude, that would be making him out-of-character. On the other hand, the nature of an AU is to create situations which would, inevitably, mean the characters are acting different from in canon. So I won't refuse it just for not being canon, but I'd really prefer it not to be too extreme). Of course with everything I've listed there are always exceptions (and often times people don't know if they're too out-of-character, or even if their original character has become a Mary Sue, anyway). I'm also not the best choice for song fics, as I have a tendency to skip over the song part when I'm reading and just read the prose. Though if I'm actually betareading something (as opposed to reading for pleasure)I'd probably at least make the effort to look at all of it.
