|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I have high expectations, if I'm honest. I like to beta writing that is already very good, but needs a thorough proofreading and polishing. I'm not looking to write a story with someone, but to help them make it better. I'm afraid I'm certainly not patient enough to beta something that requires a lot of assistance. However, what I do beta I am very thorough with, probably because I'm an editor. I'm picky with punctuation and repetition of words, and there are definitely some styles of writing that suit me more than others, though I can't describe why or what that is. Expect me to be critical and you might not agree with me about some of my ideas, which is fine - I'm open for discussions, though I currently have no msn, so you'd have to contact me through messages, etc., which can be tedious. On the other hand, I'm pretty efficient so if you need a fast beta, I am up for it. Experience-wise, I have betaed for several people before in many fandoms, on and off, usually for friends I've met through fanfiction. I enjoy working with people, so I'd be happy to see a fanfiction through from the start, working on even the summary for it and things like that. I'm happy to beta all sorts of fanfiction - chaptered, one-shots - of any rating, yaoi/yuri, etc.
Note: Please ignore my fanfiction. They're from a while ago and I'm not particularly proud of them. I'm also a better beta than I am a writer... I wish it were the other way around!
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Because I'm an editor, I'm good at catching things like punctuation, spelling and grammar mistakes. I'm happy to point out dodgy characterisation, though I can't say it's my forte. I'm quite good at making certain sentences more effective through the use of the words and punctuation used. Paragraphing, I think, is a major issue, and I'm good at cleaning that up if it's dodgy. I also have quite an imagination for crazy (but often unoriginal, I think) plots, though I don't believe that necessarily makes a good fanfiction.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm not always able to explain exactly why I want to change something for the better - I just think it is. So if you want precise feedback on what to change about your style, etc., I'm not the one to ask. I'll point it out and let you decide if you will go with it or not. I'm also British so I have a tendency to beta the spelling according to British ways, haha. With non-British works I'll need to get feedback myself for what's right and wrong. Also, I want to help with style and spelling, not provide plot ideas - that's not my forte unless I'm writing myself.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
One-shots are easier, though not exactly preferable. It's harder to beta chaptered stories because you don't know how it'll progress and can't beta and give feedback accordingly. I would prefer to beta the following pairings if it's romance: NaruSasu yaoi for Naruto, SakuSyao for CCS and TRC, KuroFai yaoi for TRC and anything goes with Furuba. I also, without a doubt, prefer AU fics for Naruto, but non-AU for Furuba; I'm not fussed with CCS and TRC.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
There's nothing I'm particularly against. As long as the story itself is decent, I will beta it. I do prefer yaoi considerably to yuri, though. I am willing to beta stories that won't be guaranteed to end, because I understand inspiration sometimes runs dry; however, I certainly don't prefer it and I will do my best to discourage writers from doing that. I also near-to despise first person stories, but I will make exceptions for those who prove themselves to be competent writers already.
