I look at my beta-reading requests with a critical eye. If your story is overrun with Mary Sues, grammatical and punctuation errors, and/or contain extremely out of character traits, your story will probably not get past my prospective stage. I tend to do a thorough background search on those who wish to acquire my services, and if I find that your reviews tend to be one-liner praises and/or insults or you tend to have a bad attitude overall, I will immediately decline your request outright with no questions asked.
If you do manage to get past my preliminary stage, I will give you my general contact information and ask what you expect of me. However, if you begin to send me spam, chain letters, or the like, I will immediately block you from my e-mail address and all your beta-reading services with me will be terminated. I try to be very accommodating of those on a tight schedule or need some flexibility when it comes to long-term projects. I normally do all my beta-reading in red and with Microsoft Word XP, though if you prefer a different type of correction method, I will work with you to find something that suits your needs. I cannot, however, accept .docx files for those who are using Windows Vista, so I ask that you please convert your file to .doc or a similar file type. I will normally send you an e-mail back if my computer cannot read your file, as mistakes do happen, but if file types become a constant problem, even after being notified, your file will be thrown aside, unread and my beta-reading services will be done.
At the end of every document I beta-read, I usually leave some commentary in the form of constructive criticism or the like. Please realize this isn't meant to insult or offend you, but to help you improve. As such, make sure you have a thick skin before you request my services as no backlash to my commentary will be tolerated. If you do feel something needs to be discussed, feel free to e-mail me or, if you need an immediate response, IM me and hopefully we can come to terms with each other or at least find a general compromise that works well between the both of us.
Also, as a beta-reader, it is not my job to help you devise a plot. Yes, I will help you in spotting plot holes, but for the most part, creating a plot is your responsibility, not mine. And since this has been happening a lot lately, please only inquire of my services after you have finished writing your one-shot/chapter. In addition to that, I will also not beta-read already posted chapters. This is due to the fact that I have had problems with it in the past and I'd prefer not to go through that messy situation again.
Finally (and I shouldn't really have to say this), please put at least some kind of credit to me when my services are used as it is just common courtesy. I am taking the time out of my hectic schedule when I could be doing something else, so at least giving me a "thank you" should be sufficient.
If you feel you can handle all of the aforementioned information, and maybe even more, and that you think you can work with me, feel free to drop me a line. I'll be more than willing to help you out.
