|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I consider myself an active editor. While I am happy to simply scan your story for technical errors, I am also willing to engage much more deeply, getting into questions of storytelling, plotting, structure, dialogue, diction, and characterization. I'm happy to simply send you back a word document marked up with comments and edits, but if you want to set up Skype calls and practice reading your story out loud to find the flow of the narration and dialogue, I am happy to do that as well. I read a lot and think I have a pretty good ear for what works and what doesn't. That isn't to say I don't have a lot of work to do in my own writing, but we all know how much easier it is to step back from other people's works versus those we have personal attachments to.
On that note, I will critique you like I critique myself. I will give a lot of feedback, and it will all be honest and straightforward. I will never criticize just to tear you down. Although I will never tell you, "This is bad," I am not afraid to say, "I straight up don't like this," in reference to some aspect of the story. But I will always explain exactly why I don't like it and what I think can be done to fix it. I also recognize that everything I suggest is my opinion, and you are under no obligation to agree with me or accept my changes.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I have a degree in a writing-intensive field (philosophy) that is arguably the single most anal retentive in all of academia about precision of language, so I've got that going for me which is nice. I have a strong handle on grammar, and I can be pretty picky when it comes to finding the right word. I hate clunky sentences and put a lot of effort toward making the writing flow. I can be incredibly anal about characterization and structure, and I'll hound you for nuance and depth. I will probably ask you, "Why?" a lot. As in, "Why did you choose this particular word," or "Why would that character say that?" or "Why is it important to mention this here in your narration? What is its relevance to the story?"
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I can be verbose in my own writing. I pride myself in being a very active editor, but I worry about oversaturating the work with my own voice.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I enjoy stories that are character-driven. If you are looking for more than just technical feedback (spelling, grammar, etc), I would prefer a complete rough draft of the entire story or at least an outline of the entire plot. I love one-shots because I'm lazy and have a fear of commitment. Anything that expands on a fictional 'verse already has my interest. Pseudo-Canonical, Original Flavor, and Day In the Limelight fics are totally my thing, for you TV Tropes people out there. Graphic content is fine as long as it's not in poor taste.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Anything the little voice in the back of your head begged you not to write before you shoved a pillow over its face.
