Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am Andi. I write things on a haphazard basis and I like to read things more than I like to write them, so if you need someone with a good touch to look over your piece, I am more than willing. I exist on dreamwidth as davidbowiezombie with more than my fair share of Puppet accounts, I am on AIM as "DavidBowieZombie" and "Inabananahammock", and finally, on Plurk as inabananahammock. Feel free to contact me, but make sure you tell me who you are and where you found me, or else I am liable to just ignore /br /br /

If I am currently your beta reader or you are considering sending me an invite, I want to make it clear that I am doing this for you for free. This is a ifavor/i, so I request that we have a talking relationship as well as a common understanding of one another's likes and dislikes before I get into this. I am also not here to rewrite things for you, as this has happened to me, and the person in question then went ahead and submitted work that was heavily edited (read, completely revised in my words) as their own with no credit. If you want to do that, I'm going to ask compensation for my time - as I have a very limited amount of it - and possibly that you credit me in the notes /br /br /

Another thing, I like it when you've heard of me before, that's cool, but Turpentine is not the be-all, end-all of my existence as a writer. A lot of my stuff here is not indicative of my skill, though I will be posting some more advanced works shortly. Take time to read all that I have to offer before you request /br /br /

Finally, I hope that we can develop something more than just a writer-beta relationship. I like to get close to the people I work for because it helps me understand their process more, helps me make suggestions and gentle adjustments when I'm working on the piece in question. I'll often ask about things like story direction or what spoilers or twists are ahead, just for the simple ability to make suggestions. Ultimately, I am not the writer, but I like to think I can help the writer in whichever decisions he or she may make later /br /br /

If none of this has scared you off, apply, my pretties.

My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am good at picking out plot holes - thanks to stumbling into a million and one of them on the way here - and grammatical errors, something you can't rely on your spell-checker to do. I can help repair lack of imagery if it becomes an issue, as well as short, choppy sentences and paragraphs, if that was not your initial intention, or if it wasn't quite as epic as /br /br /

Believability and other such accuracy issues can also be addressed, as well as warnings on anachronisms in period-pieces such as those you would find in the Assassin's Creed series. Those which aren't made explicitly within the series should often be avoided, after all. More often than not, I'll ask the writer to submit only in fandoms I am familiar with, though if it is not and you would just like grammatical advice, I will still work for you none the less... just not on as thorough a level.

My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I am a slow worker most of the time, and with life and a job on top of this, you're going to have to be patient with me, especially if I can't find the interest after work when all I want to do if hit the hay. I am also part of a community on LJ and have a thousand different things that happen to me on a regular basis, so keeping in touch and reminding me to do this will probably be the biggest challenge you have ahead of /br /br /

I can be overly nit-picky with grammar, and with plot points... but usually, if I see I can't make you budge, I'll leave you alone and not ask /br /br /

And finally, do not give me your OC's unless they are flat place-holders or something similar to that. If you throw mary-sue at me, I will never, ever work for you again, and that is a certainty. If they happen to be an interestingly written and well planned out OC with a plausable past and understandable relationship with the main character, I will definitely look into it. Examples would include assassin apprentices from Assassin's creed brotherhood. Those I can roll with as long as they're not... well... see below.

Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
Right now, as fandom goes, I am in: Dead Space (1, 2, 3), Assassin's Creed (I, II, Brotherhood, Bloodlines, Revelations Multiplayer, etc.), Final Fantasy (VII, VIII [ask first], IX [ask], XII [ask], XIII), Dissidia, Kingdom Hearts (though the subject's a little sore right now), Samurai Champloo, Trigun (canon review), Supernatural (up to season 5), and a handful of others... if you want to proposition something not listed, just ask /br /br /

If there's a fandom you'd like me to explore, suggest it, with this warning: I will probably never get into Naruto, Bleach, Avatar: the Last Airbender, Hetalia, and a lot of other stuff... those ones are listed, so don't waste your time. Anything else, you can try if you feel like it, but don't /br /br /

That being said: Orginial characters may be left at home. I am 100% serious about that. I can understand placeholders, or in the case of Brotherhood fics, the Assassin recruits would be considered OC's if they have personalities, fleshed out or not. Just none of that bullshit with long flowing raven hair and violet eyes that glittered like Venus's ass. Ezio went head over heels for Beatrice da Vinci. Did we mention she's Leo's little sister? She paints better too. iPlease./i I will find you, I swear...

Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Poetry, M-preg, and OC's of most shapes and forms. You have been warned. OOC Slash unless it's humorous, characters being bashed just because they're female. I can understand it some times, I honestly don't like Kairi, for example, but I'm not going to repeatedly beat her head with a rock just because of that... and that she stands in the way of beautiful Sora and Riku buttlove. No. Improbable slash and yuri. There's love-hate, and then there's "That would never happen." I am guilty of this, but I'm not doing it any more. No severely improbable het, for the same reasons as stated above. Draw me up a table if you think it makes sense and I might go for it. And that's really about it. Always imperative, give me a lot of warnings and ask when in doubt. I am doing this for free, so it's the least you could do.
