|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Hi! My (penname) is Sally White, though I used to be known as RDH a few years back. I have reading FF since I was in junior high, and I like to observe stories that have a high review count so as to learn why those stories have all of those reviews. I think that I have it figured out, but I could be wrong on some of them (considering that I am human and humans have a tendency to be wrong, lol). My father is a high school English teacher who also directs the theatre productions at the school as well as coaches the speech team, so I'm a spelling/grammar nazi who has a passion for the arts. I have finished all my English classes in college (hell's yeah!) and got decent grades in them. I just hate writing essays, lol. I'm a pretty nice person once you get to know me, but I do have a tendency to be blunt. I don't sugar-coat things. So if you're looking for someone who will be honest with you even if it hurts, I'm your girl! But really, I just like helping people. :)
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
As was stated above, I am a spelling/grammar nazi, so if something is misspelled and/or grammatically incorrect I will point it out. I will also tell you if something is too cheesy and/or overused. In my opinion, originality is key. I am also a very empathic person, so I will be able to tell you whether the story needs more depth for emotional appeal. I can also give you some ideas as to how to appeal to both males and females (yes, I'm a girl, but I like to think that I know how the average guy thinks).
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
When it comes to action scenes, I more or less fail at life. I know how I would want the scene to go and I can see it almost perfectly in my head, but when I try to write it out my brain decides to shut itself off. I also have a slight (major) tendency to be biased towards certain topics, especially when it involves pairing that I like and dislike. I don't like to be yelled at or told off, especially when I'm only trying to help. DO NOT snap at me just because I'm being honest about your writing; I will snap back and it will not be pretty, and then I will report you if you continue to harass me.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I prefer stories that have character depth and growth. When a story presents a situation in which a character has to push beyond their normal tendencies to get past the obstacle in their way, it makes me want to cheer for them. But I still want them to be in character. I like it when a story explores the minds of characters, that shows us what they are thinking. I do like having some action and adventure in a story, also. I am a romantic in denial, but romances do make me smile (hey, that rhymed!). I also love to laugh, so humor is a wonderful thing. However, drama helps to add feeling and anticipation. So, in less and more easily understandable words, I like character stories (like character movies) that have action and adventure, romance, humor, and drama. Easy enough, yeah?
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I'm not comfortable reading anything that has yaoi. I just can't. I have nothing against gay people, they're very nice and super friendly and I love having them as friends, I'm just not comfortable knowing about their relationships (I blame my upbringing, curse you strict Baptist parents!). I hate it when there is text talk in stories; it is an insult to the English language, plus you have a full keyboard so use it! I also really don't like reading stories that involve a lot of unnecessary deaths. Also, I don't do torture scenes - I have a weak stomach and even thinking about it makes me ill. I can take reading what the outcome of it is, but I can't take reading about the torture process. I also don't like a story if it's super cheesy.
