|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I can be whatever pleases you the most. If you're just scoping out a beta for a future story, and don't need to find someone for something immediate, feel free to chat with me via messanger service, pm me, email me a few times, just so that we can get acquainted with a hint of personality. That way we can see if there's enough writer/editor chemistry to get along. :) I won't be offended if you ask a few questions and then decide not to work with me.
I prefer to be honest. If a story is one huge long paragraph complete with multiple character dialogue, rapid POV changes and only a few scattered commas, I'm not going to lie and say "That was great!" I'm not going to say, "You suck, just give it up," either, though. I might say, "It's a start," and we'll work from there. If you're being serious about this, you don't want me for flattery purposes, you want my honesty so that you can improve. If I'm being serious about this, I'm not going to praise where there is nothing praise worthy.
If you're painfully shy, terrified of criticism, just tell me so. I promise I'm gentle and patient and you can still have a beta that will help you work through it. I'm not someone who bombards you with all of your mistakes. I always, always begin an honest critique with the good points and then work into the flaws.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am an excellent copy editor, so if your interest lies merely in having someone double check your story for syntactical issues - spelling, proper punctuation, fragments, run-ons, etc. - I can certainly handle this. However, I prefer working on more than just these issues, as word processors are capable of doing almost as much. I chiefly enjoy assisting writers in creating flow and style, crafting a story that is logical and easily followed from paragraph to paragraph but remains interesting and enjoyable rather than becoming technical. I am also willing to help with placing characterization, setting, mood, and dialogue.
But I have to say that my greatest strength is simply my experience. I am not a 13 year old new writer who has simply written and published a lot in a short period of time in order to qualify as a beta. I only have a few stories of my own on ff.net, but that is because I work diligently for quality over quantity. While it hasn't been under this penname, I've been a member of this site for 8 years, I know the ins and outs.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm human, I can't catch everything. Sorry. I won't slam you for making spelling mistakes if you don't slam me for missing one or two of them every now and again.
I suck at recognizing passive/active voice. I probably use the passive voice all the time in my own writing without ever realizing it, so if I can't catch it in my own, I certainly can't catch it in anyone else's.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I'm truly sorry to disappoint, but I absolutely must beta only the fandoms with which I'm very familiar, that way I can comment on characterization, etc.
Therefore I limit the stories I willingly beta to Death Note, Bleach, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. I won't discourage anyone from pm'ing me with a request for any other fandom, discuss it with me, if I've got any working knowledge of the fandom, I might agree, but I won't make any promises except for the 4 listed.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
And yes, I mean straight pairings, any MCxFC. I'm a slasher and have been since I started this fan fiction business. Too set in my ways for anything else. I know, how often do you hear betas refuse hetero pairing fics? Usually the opposite, right?
I will read slash, BL, shounen ai, yaoi, or whatever else you might call it. I prefer the mature fics, actually. T - M rated would be great because the fluffiest G ratings tend to make me gag a little on the sweetness. I will read limes and lemons. I am capable of critiquing sex scenes with a straight face, though I would appreciate it if those lemons were tastefully conducted. They can be PWP provided the fic at least starts out with something a little more interesting than Character A jumping Character B straight away.
I am not opposed to reading some mild kinks like light bondage, etc. But please keep it mild and on a comfortable level if you want me working on it.
Bestiality doesn't do it for me.
I won't touch rape fics with a ten foot pole. Unless - UNLESS - the rape is a mere mention, NON-GRAPHIC and used to drive a larger plot. I do not want your fics where character A says "No, I don't want it." Character B persists. Character A insists. And things ensue anyway. I don't want to see that even if Character A decides it was all good in the end. When it comes to rape, "No" always means no, and not just the first three times and then it suddenly means "Yes, oh God, harder."
