Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
As a beta reader, I am more concerned about the message delivered than how it is delivered. There are certain grammatical rules that cannot be altered, but insofar as sentence fragments and proper use of semicolons, it's really not so important if it's not making the story confusing. Rules can be sacrificed in place of style at times, and I'm more concerned with the flow and pacing of the work than whether or not every grammar rule was followed to the letter.br /br /br /br /

Conversely, there is no excuse for poor spelling in a finished work, typo or not. That's part of my job as a beta, find and correct these errors. Everyone makes typos or spelling mistakes, that's why we have spell-check and dictionaries. A human eye is better, though, and that is one of the functions of a beta. br /br /br /br /

In short, everyone's style is a little different. So long as the style is used with enough grammar rules to make the work clear, no big deal. Everything is on a case-by-case basis. In life and beta ^_^

My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm good at spotting spelling and grammar mistakes, and also at pointing out minor repetitions and how to work around them (synonyms work well here). I'm also decent at making a story flow by use of transitional phrases and extending shorter, choppier sentences.br /br /br /br /

I also excel at putting a complex idea into words. Too often are thoughts and feelings of characters boiled down into one word summaries. I excel at making them believable, while still maintaining readability of the work.

My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I have a difficult time making action flow, but it can be done. I tend to either over-generalize movements or get far too bogged down in the details. If there is a long sequence of nothing but a series of movements, be it a battle or a dance, I have difficulty getting it to flow properly.
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I will essentially beta anything, so long as I don't find it particularly distasteful. Like I stated before, everything on a case-by-case basis. Luckily, there's very little I find to be outright distasteful, and my interests are broad.
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
The only things I prefer not to beta-read are High School AUs, but only in certain cases. For instance, if the characters are of high-school age in canon, and frequently exhibit the mannerisms and thought patterns of high school age students, that's just fine. A good example of where these can be done relatively well is the Kingdom Hearts fandom. The only times where it doesn't mesh well with me is in instances where the canon characters, regardless of age, have to deal with scenarios far more complex than your general high school student would ever have to cope with. For example, though Link and Zelda are of a high school junior/senior age in Ocarina of Time, they are dealing with death, the collapse of their government, their Kingdom falling to ruin, and the very real possibility that they cannot save their land, even though it may cost them their lives. Characters who deal with such situations rarely translate believably into high school AU fiction.br /br /br /br /

Also, anything that glorifies hatred of any race, gender, religious belief, sexual preference, etc I will not beta. I don't put up with it in my life, and I will not read about it, even in a fictional sense. If it is depicted as morally unjust in your fiction and is a plot device, I am totally okay with that. Sometimes darker themes need exploring, most definitely. I would be excited to help in that regard.
