|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I try to look for story flow, believable dialogue, and action scenes (if there are any). I'm also on the lookout to make sure scenes that are supposed to be heavily emotional achieve their desired effect. And I confess, I've been known to suggest an entire line of dialogue here and there. I give comments both positive and negative. By this I mean if I think a scene really needs work, I'm not afraid to say so. If something stands out as being especially good, I'll also say so. So basically I don't stroke egos, but I'm not a literary Simon Cowell either.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Dialogue and inter-character relations are my forte. I'm also (I think) fairly good with keeping action scenes exciting. I'm usually pretty good at spotting grammar errors and misplaced words, but for the most part I'm looking at the story itself rather than trying to be an editor. I do my best work with epic stories.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I don't have much of an eye for spelling. I firmly believe this is why God created spellchecks. =P I'm also no good whatsoever at finding what's good or bad in a love story. I've been told I have a tendency to dwell on small points occasionally, which can be a severe handicap dealing with stories as long and complex as I like to work with.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
Something with a blend of action, intrigue, a little suspense, and maybe a romance sub-plot. As I said above, my best work is with Epic stories. I usually don't even read anything that's less than 30,000 words. Of course, the key phrase there is "usually don't," which is markedly different from "never do."
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I wouldn't know a mystery if Sir Arthur Conan Doyle clubbed me over the head with it, and I absolutely stink at writing love stories. So if your story is a romance novel between Nancy Drew and Sherlock Holmes, I'm probably not your best bet.
