Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Who am I as a beta-reader? Well, I love literature, and I love fanfiction! I suppose one of the reasons I love fanfiction is that it's a great way to relax and let off some steam. Another reason is that everybody who posts a story here has a great imagination! There's nothing better than creating your own scenario with the charatcers that you love the most. When I beta a story, I go over each sentence carefully, making sure that there are no grammar/error mistakes, and highlighting the sentences that don't make sense. When I send the chapter back to the author, I also send a note to them, giving them hints, encouragment and constructive criticism (it's not in my blood to be nasty. Being nasty is just so... nasty).
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am a grammar/spelling freak, Which is useful during English Literature lessons, but annoys my friends to no end. I've written a few humour fanfictions/oneshots, which I've always had positive feeback from, and I enjoy beta-ing those type of fanfics! I've always enjoyed creative writing in school, and those pieces are the ones that I get the most marks in. I always get carried away with my imagination, so a two-page creative piece based around the phrase 'I'm so sorry' managed to turn into an angsty, heartbreaking piece of ten pages. The teacher enjoyed it, though!
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I think most beta-readers would have this weakness: when you have been beta-ing a story for a while, and discussing said story with the authory, you can sometimes skip over plot holes. This means that you will be able to understand them, but the reviewers might not. So, when I beta a fanfiction, I put myself in to the mind of someone who is reading the story for the first time. That way, any missing scenes or paragraphs will be easier to see, and then I can notify the author of it!
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I'm open to beta-ing anything as long as it falls in to my Beta Preferences. I would obviously prefer fanfictions based on books, movies, or TV programmes that I've read or watched, and written fanfictions on myself. It is unlikey that I would beta for something such as CSI, since I have never watched the programme!
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Fanfiction where the characters are ridiculously OOC on purpose. It can really grate on my nerves... for me, it's hard to follow a fanfic like that. Also, AU doesn't suit me. Some crossovers do (see Preferences below- I can only beta crossovers on stories that I am familiar with. Ask me if you're not sure!)
