|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Hmm... let's see. That's a tricky one. I love this site! I am pretty good with writing and editing stories. I would love to read anything you give me and am currently in the business of writing Persona fics (though none are posted yet)... and the others that I come across randomly. As you see... I am a very random person. Although I have been slightly preoccupied and pressed for time as of late, I will give my best effort at meeting deadlines (though college coursework will make that a hassle, I'm sure) and furthermore, I am a grammar natzi. So, beware. br /
Here's some insight into my style as a beta reader and the things I do for you as one:br /
I assure you I take my job very seriously. And what is that job exactly? I am here to show you what went wrong in your chapter and to teach you how to fix it so you'll know what to keep in mind for next time. I am here to help you improve your skills. All I ask in return is that you be serious about improving and make an effort to collaborate with me about the edits and suggestions I make. Yes, that means ask questions if you have any. br /
What I usually do is correct grammar and spelling, spot words that seem to be missing or don't seem to belong and point those out to you, and fix verb tense errors if any occur. After I do that, I offer my personal opinion along with some constructive criticism (strongpoints and weakpoints) regarding the chapter. Sometimes, I will fix formatting issues if there are any, and I will also offer suggestions and address areas of concern (for example, if something doesn't seem right). I will always explain all of my corrections, which will be highlighted in the chapter for reference.
On a side note, please excuse the br/ things that keep popping up here in the spacing. I don't understand why they're there and I can't get rid of them.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'd say I'm good at editing grammar, fixing any spelling errors, and correcting formatting issues to help minimize confusion for the readers so the story flows easier for the readers to swallow at a pleasurable pace. I guess you could say I'm good at characterization as well - I know how to develop characters and I usually have a knack for spotting when something seems too "cheesy". I am more often than not full to the brim with new ideas and suggestions! I'm skilled at putting together a good story and have been helping writers improve their work for years. Lately, I've discovered a particular fondness and technical skill at beta-ing anything Japanese-based: manga, games, etc... I've been studying Japanese culture and their use of honorifics and, personally, I think I'm pretty good at it. Plus... Japanese culture has become one of my passions. *sighs fondly*
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I repeat words quite a bit... if you haven't noticed. Word choice has never been one of my particular strong points, but I'm still improving. Sometimes, in my own writing, I'm bad at using proper subjects. You know... I, you, we... they're all the same to me. ;) Especially (and more particularly) when I'm reworking a story that was originally written in first person into a third person narration, I tend to miss things during the first few revisions and a few inconsistent pronouns/subjects slip through. But hey... No one's perfect.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
Persona Series/SMT! Or anything to do with magic... as you can tell from my profile. I love magic... which is also why I've taken to reading Merlin stories, so feel free to ask me to beta them, too. Oh, I would love to beta anything to do with Disney-related stories! I find them incredibly fun... especially when they have OCs in them. I definitely like OCs coming in and messing everything up. XD I'm also interested in fantasy and supernatural stories. Friendship is another one I kind of have a soft spot for. And who can forget parodies? I love those.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I guess I'll beta-read practically anything! Oh... except severe M-rated slash. O_o I can read them sometimes, but it's very hard when there's too much detail; aka: sex scenes. Then again, it's not just slash sex that bugs me; it's anything that has graphic sex scenes in it, period. I just simply can not do it. *shakes head* I'm sorta wary of fem-slash, but I can read it... Again, it's very hard to do because I'm so used to yaoi rather than yuri - I have yet to come across a yuri story that was written well, to tell you the truth, and only very few yaoi stories I've read were worth it. I'll beta-read stories like that, but only if you ask really nicely... even though I prefer not to unless I know what I'm getting into ahead of time. And anything that uses the actors (from movies or TV shows) instead of the characters they represent gets me slightly irritated.
