Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
First off, I think letting others read your work-in-progress is so vital if you have a serious eye towards making your stories the best they can be. Having another set of eyes scour your words for things you missed can be so helpful! I hope to be that person for you! When I read, I look for an emotional connection with the characters and I hope to be genuinely invested in where the story is going. Without that, it doesn't matter if you have perfect grammar or if your dialogue is super-awesome, I think people lose interest. I tackle everything in chunks, concentrating on the big issues (consistent characterization, believable plot lines, etc) before moving down to the smaller ones (spelling, punctuation). Once I finish reading a "chunk", I put it together in the whole and see if it works against the other "chunks", and if not, then I go back and start over. It's worked for me for years, and I hope to put it to work for you. We all have very busy lives. Please don't send me anything to beta-read and expect it back in an hour. For starters, very few people can give quality feedback in that amount of time, and I would like to give you my best when you ask for my help. Depending on the length and the amount of other stories I have on my plate, I will try my best to get back to you as fast as I can. I can only ask for your patience!
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My strengths are in the areas of grammar, spelling, and punctuation (a BA in English Lit/Philosophy and a BEd in English Language Arts will do that to a person). I am blessed with a photographic memory, so I pick up on inconsistencies (be it a spelling error or a factual one) quite quickly; this is an especially helpful skill if you have hacked at and rewritten a piece so much it barely resembles your original draft and you want to make sure that everything is very clear for your reader.
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I have some trouble sometimes with believable characterizations. In the world of fan fiction, it is very easy to either make characters too one-dimensional, or to make them do things that are waaaaay out of character based on the book/tv show/movie from which the character originated. I am pretty good at fixing these mistakes when they are pointed out to me, and depending on my familiarization with the original source material, I should be able to point out glaring mistakes to you. But bear with me!
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I have no real preference for stories. Check my profile page for a detailed list of likes and dislikes. My best work will probably come about if you send me a story which is based on a source I am familiar with, but I'll give anything a shot!
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
There are some things I'm not familiar with and wouldn't feel as comfortable reviewing, so consequently you probably won't feel comfortable sending them to me - fantasy and some SF are two genres that come to mind. Again, just to be safe, check my profile for my likes and dislikes - I will post a detailed list so that you can see what would be the best.
