|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
In addition to basic grammar and spell-checking, I can also give you feedback regarding dialogue, characterization, story structure, and any other elements I feel require attention. When I write a critique I try to find positive things to discuss as well the obvious errors and things that need amending, so as to somewhat lessen the blow. However if you seek my help, I will try to be as objectively and constructively critical as I need to be. I like to keep an open communication with whomever I'm beta-reading for so as to best know what I can do for you. This, of course, necessitates a certain modicum of availability from you, the author, otherwise I might as well be talking to a wall and that doesn't help you at all. Be clear about what you want from me as your beta and I will do my best to assist you with your project.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm fairly good with dialogue, character development, and finding the right rhythm or beats to a scene. I come from a film-making background so I'm used to finding the essential kernels of a scene/story and cutting out the fat. I'm also pretty decent with basic grammar and spelling, so if all you want is a proof-reader, you got it. I might sound kind of tough in my description, but I have a strong sense of humor and I'm really a rather pleasant individual (if I may say so myself!)- basically I will try to keep this a nice experience. Fanfiction is meant to be fun, after all!
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My own writing tends to veer away from purple prose or anything overly poetic/descriptive, so if you need help with your own language or style, I might take a little while longer to analyze your work and find a solution. Furthermore, I can help you think about what you want to accomplish with your story or pinpoint a theme, but that really has to come from you and I cannot hold your hand beyond an in-depth conversation. Lastly, I don't claim to be an expert on any of my selected fandoms and though I will try to do my best to check the facts, I am human and liable to forget specific details.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
Obviously I prefer stories that fit into my fandom. But if I had to narrow it down even further, I would prefer beta-reading anything related to hobbits within the Lord of the Rings universe. I know hobbit culture/history the best and I have a pretty firm grip on most of the popular hobbits' personalities and backgrounds. On a more general scale, I would prefer humor and romance, though I'm not terribly picky when it comes to genres. I like stories that function within the realm of canon, but I'm not completely closed off to AU plots. I guess for a clearer idea of what I do, you'd really have to look at what I don't do.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Anything that violates canon, especially incest or slash. I'm a little more open-minded about the latter, but it depends on the fandom and the pair you're slashing together. Absolutely not for the first, though- that's pretty much set in stone. I'm also not a fan of stories focusing on OCs and their romantic relationships with central characters from my fandoms, especially if canon specifically states that he or she winds up with someone else. I really don't want to read anything with a Mary Sue-like character, unless you are super duper willing to change major elements to make your character more realistic and believable. I would prefer to not beta anything that requires me to be fluent in another language, whether it's French or Elvish.
