|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Written 13 stories on this name, 60 ish as Rose G, well over 100 original short stories and poems, a couple published, and a few novels. One novel now accepted for publication. Have proof-read 2 non-fiction books, 1 novel for friends. Normally, will go through a chapter at a time and make suggestions, then go through the whole lot again at the end. But I'm flexible. I'd ask simply that you enjoy your writing, as it's meant to be fun, and I'm not going to make it horrible for anyone. Also, remember that I'm human and may make mistakes. Other than that, I'm willing to work with anyone, especially new / young writers - I remember that stage very clearly!
Normally, I average a chapter a week, but this depends on real life. I'm self-employed and therefore have to work around my job, and I need the income!
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm good on spotting OOC-ness and general character work, from development to being believable.
Can provide detailed advice on how it reads, word choice etc. Grammer and punctuation. Hunting down adverbs with my trusty flamethrower.
Also, my pet peeve is stories lacking tension or pace, so I'm expert at spotting this and coming up with ways to fix it.
Dialect writing for English regional / some American accents.
Factual / canon errors in most fandoms I follow.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Main problem is that I suffer from mild wordblindess aka dyslexia. Therefore, I cannot spell very well, although I normally catch typos. I always work with a dictionary, but can't promise anything with regards to this.
I have also been known to get lost in very good stories and therefore miss major plotholes.
May be a weakness for some authors - I have a very light-hearted view of life. I will take your work seriously - I'll probably joke with you about it afterwards.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
The kind of stuff on my already written lists - ie angst, black humour, slash.
For TV shows, any pieces which fit so well with canon they could be episodes.
For books, pieces featuring on minor characters often get my attention.
The Bill, Torchwood, LoTR, all the others listed below. Sci-fi or fantasy works in general.
In general, any original ideas and some insight into characters. Any length from drabbles to novels. Any age rating, any warnings and preferable, an author who's enjoyed their writing.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
On a personal level, I don't like fem-slash. If it's a minor part of a long story, get in touch and we'll see, but if it's the main plotline, I'm not interested.
Also, vastly AU pieces, such as high-school fics unless written as out and out humour.
Meta-fiction, unless already established in source - ie The Dark Tower.
Fluffy romance pieces, straight or slash, don't normally do it for me. Again, a few scenes or a couple of chapters in a much longer work are okay, but 40,000 words of fluff and I'll be looking for a sick bowl.
As for pairings, in Harry Potter, I will not deal with HPDM slash; in anything else, if you've written it and can make me think its believable, I'll read it.
