|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am a dedicated beta-reader who is capable of reading long or short pieces of fiction and providing honest feedback and suggestions for edits to tighten up a plot, atmosphere, etc. I'm not hypercritical or overly aggressive, but I don't pull punches when I think something needs work. I'm dedicated to the integrity of a story and improving the writer. With that, anyone who would like me to beta their work needs to be able to take constructive criticism and put it to use, rather than taking it personally. I won't work more than once with writers who become defensive or angry with me. I assume that anyone who brings their story to me for beta-reading wants to do their best and is looking for concrit, and I do my best to provide it. My criticism will always be directed at the work, and not the author. I've had my own fiction beta'd in the past so I have a pretty good idea of what constitutes concrit, and what is just plain silly nitpicking.
I solemnly promise not to nitpick. Unless that's what you WANT, of course.
Typically, I don't change the body of the work itself. If someone sends me a doc to work with, my edits will always be red and in parentheses - and I will NOT delete any of the original work. I also save the beta'd work with a new filename (i.e. 'story_beta.doc') so there's little risk of the author accidentally saving my beta'd document over theirs.
I am totally capable of focusing on a single topic. If you want an extra-careful grammar check, I'll do that. If you want comments on the plot, characterization, dialog, sentence structure, pairing believability, etc. - just say so! If you'd like me to *not* bug you about some things, like grammar, spelling, etc. - again, just say and I'll overlook them and focus on what you want me to focus on.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am great at putting plots together, seeing plot holes, and making suggestions to make plots tighter. I'm not too shabby at commenting on characterization, either, when it's characters that I'm familiar with. Additionally, I can spot unrealistic/exaggerated emotional responses a mile away - I'm good at helping authors add impact with a scene and toning down the narrative to make it more subtle.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I tend to overlook grammar - I'm not much of a grammar nazi. I like to experiment with impact, and I'm still learning and don't pretend to know everything there is to know about effective writing. I can use Word's grammar check pretty well, but for the most part, this is something that's just not that important to me.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I prefer stories with interesting characterization, unusual plots, romance and humor. I also really like to read slash and I'm relatively omnivorous when it comes to pairings, ratings and content. I really like Honda Hiroto/Tristan Taylor! If you have a fic that features him predominantly, I'd be GLAD to beta it for you. Yu-Gi-Oh! stories that feature the characters grown up are particularly fascinating to me.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Please don't ask me to beta stories that involve Yami no Malik, AKA Evil Marik, AKA Evil Malik (you get who I'm getting at) in any kind of romantic plot. With that, please don't ask me to beta Seto/Joey, Seto/Pegasus, Joey/Pegasus, Tristan/Pegasus, or Duke/Pegasus. If it isn't genfic or a pairing with Tristan, Duke, or someone in her relative age group, please don't ask me to beta something with Serenity in it. Additionally, stories with hardlined submissive/dominant roles or traditional seme/uke relationships alternately make me sick or piss me off, so if that's your cup of tea, I'm not the beta for you. I'm not a fan of master/pet stuff either. If you aren't sure if I'd be interested in the pairing of your story, you're welcome to ask me. :) I believe everyone can write whatever they want, and I'll never judge you for what you write, I may just say I can't beta it for you.
