|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm quite a critical beta-reader - I can be very frank when it comes to commenting and pointing out mistakes. I'm not reserved of judgement, but I can assure you that if I say something's good, then most people will like it. Like everyone else, I have personal preferences and favourite pairings, but I can adjust and 'morph' into someone's tastes, so I'll be able to tell you how people of your particular pairing/kind/genre/whatever will accept your story. It has to be plausble, however - if you want to write about a rather ...strange pairing, shall we say, then make sure you can adjust your plot to fit it. I also won't read anything that has dialogue that doesn't make sense - unless it's meant to be that way, of course. You all know what I mean. I do hope that whoever I beta for has at least moderate English, and does not get discouraged if the reviews they get are less than complimentary. If there's anything that ticks me off, it's authors who stop/delete a fairly decent story because 'no one else likes it!' unless you know it's really bad (and if you do, why post it up in the first place?) A review really can make someone's day, but if you don't have one or get really bad ones, it doesn't mean your story is doomed.
So the one thing that I expect from any author asking me to beta-read is to have confidence(or if that fails perseverance) in their stories. I want them to know that it's what they write and like to write that counts; and not everyone will like their stories. Above all, I want them to have a passion for their writing, their stories, and enjoy what they read as well as write. When you do that, everyone's at least going to know you like and know your stuff, so they'll at least remember you.
One last thing though: I do NOT accept any fanfictions that purposely makes fun of the category it's writing about. If you don't like the book/movie/category, fine; but don't deride it. It would be a very narrow-minded, stupid, disdainful and idiotic thing to do (not to mention time-wasting).
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm very detail-oriented, I'll admit that. I can remember many things and rules from books, and I normally point out mistakes to writers, whether in fanfiction or the real world. I'm also open-minded, as I'll accept anything as long YOU can make it seem logical. If there are any questions about how well I write and my mastery of English, I'd advise you to go read my stories and decide for yourselves. Review if you have the time, by the way. I have absolutely not a clue of what I would like to see in a betareader, since I don't even have one; so you'll have to take it on my stories and what you see from me here. Just a thing: I admit to have a proficiency in passive and lively writing - though if you view this bfore I finish my latest story, you probably won't see the lively part. I also have a rather decent knack for descriptive paragraphs and 3rd POV, without any particular person actually being there. And I get into the characters (err) characters rather well, if I say so myself.
Still, all remains to be judged by none other than you.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Erm, I can take about three days to betaread? Hey, I write too, you know. And there'll be periods every March, June, August and October when I won't even be online, as those are normally when exams crop up and I spend my time studying.
Also, I only know the languages English and Malay (yes, you read right) as I'm a Malaysian. I can read and write in Jawi but as that's the ancient version of Malayan alphabets before the British came along, I don't think it counts.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I am a particular fan of friendship types, especially between characters who the REAL autors portrays as doubtful friends/rivals/enemies/idiots. Take Bartimaeus and Nathaniel, Merlin and Arthur, Goku and Vegeta, Harry and Malfoy/Snape, and Sameth and Mogget. For example.
PS: If you don't know at least one of these characters you should probably go put your head in a meat grinder. And no, I can't assist you. A few hints to those people: the characters are from the Bartimaeus trilogy, Merlin, DragonballZGT, Harry Potter and Abhorsen.
If you want me at my best, then write a Bartimaeus trilogy fanfiction. I know everything possibly known of those books.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I can take Yaoi; redundant example to be seen above, but I will NOT take Yuri. I'm a girl and that's gross, if you don't mind. That's boy's love for Yaoi, and girl's one for Yuri. In case your head is a piece of wood and you still don't get it, then those refer to homosexual pairings.
