Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm very much a "focus on the details" kind of person, nit-picking here and there to make a story readable and realistic. I won't hesitate to tell you what I think is correct grammatically speaking. If you think something is right, I would love to talk about it, because often it's a matter of taste. I would like a back-and-forth kind of relationship, where we send each other as many drafts as required to make the story the best it can be. I adore scifi (that's mainly what I read) and I totally support using that genre as a way to explore anthropological and social issues. I hope you will take my ideas about crafting a well-written, meaningful story into consideration. Just know that everything I suggest is in good faith and designed to make your story better, to the best of my abilities. Please feel free to ask me to keep an eye out for specific things, like story arc, characters being believable, discrepancies with canon, and I will be happy to oblige.
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Grammar and other technical areas are one of my greatest strengths. I am very exacting when it comes to spelling and grammar; if this is a concern of yours, I can take care of it. I'm a big believer in interesting descriptors and I'll encourage you to find new ways of expressing perhaps clich├ęd ideas. I think I also have a good perspective whether a story and its characters are realistic or not. I'm a stickler for people being in character, so I can help you keep them that way provided I know them well.
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I often write very long sentences, almost like stream-of-consciousness with lots of commas. If this is not your style, I will probably suggest you link sentences together. This is advice you are free to ignore as the creator of your own piece. I often get caught up in details, obsessing about how something should be expressed in exactly the right way, which could be frustrating for you.
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I could read romance all day, which I feel is probably the case with many betas. I love character studies, and angst is my jam. Dismal beauty, symbolism, abstractness, psychological thrills, and disillusionment with the world, bring it on. Also, I love man-emotions, especially if they're written by a man. What men are thinking fascinates me, and it's something I love to see explored in fiction.
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I have nothing against slash, but I prefer it be kept to canon relationships. I really hate when stories deviate from canon or what could conceivably happen in canon (unless it's a stated AU, many of which are great)in any large way. I don't do babyfic/kidfic, or crossovers unless you plead your case. I'm not such a huge fan of action-only stories (versus character-based stories), but I can be persuaded to read them.
