Who am I as a beta-reader?
I am a graduate from University, so I have a high regard and sense for punctuality and grammar and spelling. So if there is anything that you give me that doesn't flow right because of a lack of grammar or too much of it, then I shall spot it and do something about it :-) . I love reading, and I feel as though this gives me an edge to be a good beta-reader, purely because I'm constantly exposed to different themes, settings and writing styles, so that I can be an asset to the writer.
What is my betareading style?
I tend to read aloud conversations that people have in stories, so that I can actually hear if it sounds right. If it doesn't sound right, then I change it so that it sounds better. I also tend to look for descriptions, as when there isn't any verbal communication going on in the story, the reader has to rely heavily on the description to tie everything together. I also have a pretty fast turn-around for stories that I read and ones that I write, in that I will read the chapter once and make corrections, leave it for a day, and then go back over it. Depending on the things I have going on in my life, it will normally take me between 3-6 days for a chapter to get back to the writer. Lastly, I have a brutally honest sense of honesty, so if I don't like how a sentence is written, I will probably change it. It's not because I'm nitpicking at all the little things - it's because I want the best for your story.
Firstly, my main expectation is politeness! If you don't agree with what I've edited in the chapter or story section that you sent me, please don't send me an angry hate email! Just politely tell me that you don't agree with that change, and we can work on it together :-) . I can guarantee a really happy and lively reception from myself, as if we like each other, it could become a regular thing of me being a beta for your work.
Secondly, a plot overview of your story would be nice to see as well. This is so that when you approach me, I can see where you want the story to go, and I have a much more informed choice about whether to be your beta or not. Plus, as I go through the story with you, it would be a much better way for me to make sure that your story is staying on course.
Thirdly, I would expect us just to have fun. You must obviously love the shows that you are writing for, and I obviously like being a beta because I've put myself out there. If we don't have a fun, working relationship together, it'll get really boring really quickly, and I don't want that to happen. So as long as we both put in 110% effort, I'm sure we'll be a brilliant partnership.
