|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm not certain what to put in this box. I don't really know how to describe my style of beta reading. I suppose it would be something along the lines of, "correct mistakes and suggest potential story improvements or ideas." I just like to fix stuff and make it better if I can.
As far as my expectations go, I don't really have too much. Some patience would be necessary; I work full-time and my friends often claim what free time remains. I can really only guarantee a few hours a night after work that I'd be able to work on beta-ing. Aside from that, I only ask that authors accept corrections, and hopefully learn from them.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Spelling and grammar are probably my strongest points. I used to entertain myself by reading the dictionary. You would never have a your/you're or there/their/they're error (or any other homophone mixup) if I was your beta. I've also been told I am pretty decent at characterization, so I may be able to help round out a flat character or two if necessary.
Oh, I'd also be good for information on weapons and combat, both modern and medieval. I'm kind of a gun nut, so I could make sure your characters aren't messing up with them, or using the wrong terminology (which always irritates me.) I'm pretty good for keeping things realistic, so if you want to write a gunfight that isn't informed entirely by silly Hollywood theatrics, I'm your guy.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I have difficulty filling things in. I have created huge, thriving worlds with lots of major, exciting events, but the parts of the story in between those events can be hard for me to put together. I know character A needs to (and will) find item B to get to area C, but I struggle to figure out how they do it. Ideally, this wouldn't be a huge factor for me as a beta, since I'd mostly be proofreading. On the plus side, it isn't as hard when I can give/receive feedback.
I also have a tendency to ramble a bit and lose track of where I'm meant to be going sometimes. In my own (mostly un-posted) writing, I'll occasionally have a character force things back on track when a conversation wanders, which can be jarring.
One last thing: As of 7/12/2017 (US date format), I am actually new to beta-reading on this site. I've edited many of my own stories, but very few of anyone else's. I'm not sure whether my style of editing will be ideal for everyone, or honestly, how anyone else actually does it.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
None that I can think of immediately. I enjoy a good adventure story, along with non-garbage romance stories, so I'd probably be most useful in those, though I suspect I'd still be at least moderately useful in any case. I am fairly well-versed in sci-fi and fantasy, as well, but I doubt I can be relied on to come up with a whole lot of sci-fi techno-jargon. I'm more about the, "what it does," than the, "how it does it."
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Again, nothing I can think of immediately. Most of the stuff I would immediately refuse is already against FFN's rules. I suppose I'd be unlikely to accept any mystery stories. Having a question remain unanswered annoys me, and when that's the whole point of the story, I'm likely to get mad about it. To be fair, my distaste for this may be due to my experiences where authors keep the question unanswered by making every single character unforgivably stupid.
