Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I love the written word. How something is written is just as important as what is written. My hope is to help writers reach their potential as great story-tellers. One sentence at a time!
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I've been complemented on detailed character research. Although my story output is low, I feel the quality of my writing is good. I regularly engage other beta readers for guidance. I try to carefully prepare each chapter before posting. I've also been complemented on my development of OC's. My OC's are realistic beings with faults and complexities. I use them as windows to perceive and develop characters that are native to the universe I am working in. They are not meant to be "wishful inserts". If you are developing an OC in a universe, I believe I can help you weave the character into the story without unleashing the dreaded Mary Sue. Most importantly, I’m a registered nurse. My father was a medic in the Green Berets. I enjoy studying and researching acute care treatment scenarios. I assisted a FF writer with an accurate aftermath of a tension pneumothorax, caused by a bullet. I am no expert, but I may be able to direct you to the right information so can draw your own conclusions. My goal is to support accuracy in writing and teach research skills to enhance future writing.
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My scope is very small right now. I have limited time and narrow interests. I also have very little patience for Mary Sue OC's. I can be honest and direct with my analysis, but I will not be insulting. If you are not serious about becoming a better writer or story-teller, then I am not the right beta reader for you. Part of being a really great writer is not only believing in yourself, but being able to weather the criticism of others with grace.
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I prefer quality over quantity. There are many writers that can produce multiple chapters in a month without much thought to spelling errors, sentence structure, or character development. Fanfiction is great, but it can also be a tool to refine your skills as a writer. Everyone has to start somewhere! I am fine with M/M, F/F, and M/F relationships. I don't mind sexual content, as long as you are attempting to write well, with the integrity of the characters in mind. I am fine with OC's. I work with one myself, but I will be the first to let you know if you've gone Mary Sue on me!
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Works that stray too far from the integrity of the fanfiction character. Do some research. Get to know the character. If you are pairing an OC with a major character, make sure the OC has the complexity to maintain the storyline. I am not a fan of useless gore or violence that does not move the story forward. Nor am I a fan of the frequent use of expletives. I will work with all ratings, but I reserve the right to withhold my services if I feel the story is blatantly obscene.
