|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I may not be a competent writer in terms of writing fanfic, but I've read a crapload of science fiction and fantasy. I finish everything I start reading, even if it's terrible. I also have read a lot of manga and watched even more anime. I have a very definite idea of what I like, and my review of your story is based on my personal opinion. I am a very competent reader and know how to appreciate the finer points of somebody else's writing. My sisters will tell you that I babble on about the author's word choice and how it created this kind of mood here. Other things I enjoy are deep character development. My absolute favorite thing is to know what the character is thinking and feeling about the events around them at any given moment. Some of my favorite authors for this are Scott Lynch, Mercedes Lackey, E.E. Knight, Naomi Novik, and Brent Weeks. They're great examples of how to blend dialogue, actions, and thoughts to create deep characters with layers upon layers of motivations and flaws. Now I'm babbling again, but you get the point. I always try to give constructive criticism, but my apologies if it doesn't come out sounding that way. I never try to flame anyone, honest.
My method is to read your story and add in comments and suggestions as I go. I might read it once, I might read it a couple of times. I might also ask to contact you on some sort of IM, such as Skype, so we can talk about stuff in real time. I DO NOT rewrite your story for you. Any edits will be made by the writer. Ultimately, it is the writer's choice whether or not to incorporate any of my suggestions.
If you want me to beta-read for you, send me a PM. I'll get back to you within 48 hours. Since I have some requests in progress, and receive more all the time, do your best to intrigue me. Tell me what your story is about, how long it is, why you're writing it, et cetera, et cetera. I don't mind long messages at all, since I'm a very fast reader. I'm not going to judge you solely based on grammar, punctuation, and spelling, but do try to be readable.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm good at:
1: Spotting/fixing spelling and grammar mistakes
2: Identifying continuity issues
3: Knowing when a character is in character and when they aren't
4: Understanding how a particular story's universe works and knowing when you're following its rules or not
5: Figuring out the purpose of a story, whether it's to fill in missing moments, build on something not explored in the original story, or teach a moral, and advise you on how to better get that across to a reader
6: Knowing what words are appropriate for the effect/mood you're trying to get across
7: Spotting redundancies in your writing
8: Seeing if character motivations and reactions are believable and appropriate to any given situation
9: Providing ideas to help move the plot the way you want it to go
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My weaknesses would be:
1: Giving feedback that is helpful without seeming like a nitpicky monster
2: Skimming when I should pay close attention to detail (I promise to read it over again to avoid that, though!)
3: Thinking I have no weaknesses as a beta reader
4: Remembering to give positive feedback to balance the negative feedback
5: Anything related to group, yaoi/yuri/gay or lesbian sex, since I'm not entirely sure on the mechanics of it and wouldn't know whether certain things are possible or not.
6: Playing favorites when it comes to (relation)ships. If you're shipping a ship that I don't like, I'm going to be much more critical of how you write it than I would with ship that I'm on board with. This shouldn't be too much of a problem, though, as I'm indifferent towards all but a few ships.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I love fanfics about missing moments that occur during the course of the original story. I also like reading fanfics about canon couples. I'll read any romance stories you write, actually. I will read fanfics about your take on what happened after the story ended, too. I'll also read Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragon fics and other crossover things. If you got something that's OC-centric, I'll take that on so long as you provide me with a detailed character sheet of the OC in question. I'll accept AU fics if you can convince me how awesome they are going to be beforehand. I will accept non-traditional relationship stories (shonen-ai, shojo-ai, non-binary, genderfluid, etc.)
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I don't like stories that are about characters having sex for no reason other than you wanted to write porn. If the story has sex scenes for plot-related purposes, that's okay. I will not accept incest or extreme pedophilia (meaning an age gap of 5 years with the younger half being underage. If your couple consists of one character being 16 and the other 18, that's alright). I also won't accept M!Preg stories (stories about same-sex couples adopting babies are acceptable). I also won't accept stories that are currently published AND in progress (if you want to take it down for rewrites, I'll accept that).
