|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
As a beta-reader, I like to think of myself as someone who'll help my writer with their story - looking at key elements and finding the ones that flow the best and emphasising on those, while at the same time I'd root out the bits that - however interesting they may be - don't flow so well and either offer advice on how to make them fit better or just to cut them out.
Of course, the fic is entirely the creation and property of the writer- I do not presume to change your story or even to add my own influence- I completely accept that the fic belongs to the writer, and is more often than not their baby, so I'd never try to impinge on that. However, if I feel that it's sub-par, or if there are sections of the fic that are irrelevant or taking away from the main focus of the story, I would mention that, but I would also provide help or a way in which to change or fix it - constructive criticism, as it were. I can also act as an editor/proof-reader, and so I'm more than likely to bring up any mistakes or issues that may be present in the writer's work. Anything I say will have nothing but the truth behind it, but that also means that I will probably be blunt to the point of painfulness at times, so be warned :)
Finally, while I do not expect the writer to implement everything I say, I would appreciate it if my writer listened to everything I had to say, and if he/she disagrees with any of my opinions, then if they could discuss it with me and explain to me why so. I like to think of myself as an open-minded person, so I'm more than likely to understand any requests and to change according to them.
I look forward to working with you guys :) x
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My strong suits would be editing and acting as proof reader - that is, I will definitely focus on the writer's grammar and spelling and take care to ensure that their work is as flawless and smooth as possible. I'm also quite good in the area of story-telling, and so will be able to help the writer make their story as credible and enjoyable as possible. Considering that I usually do a fair bit of research on my own when it comes to character development (i.e. if a character has depression, I'd go away and research that as much as possible in order to make it believable) and I like to think that I'm proficient at portraying various personas, I'm fairly sure that I'm capable of helping a writer with any genre, story type or character that they use, so rarity or a complex plots should not be an issue :)
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm not very tolerant of rudeness or vulgarity, so if my writer was to be rude and swear at me without provocation, I'd probably shut them down immediately and just ditch them. Admittedly not very professional, but courtesy is one of the easiest and most attractive aspects of a human being. I'm a bit of a procrastinator as well, and so I usually only just make it inside the deadline - so expecting a swift reply from me without prior warning is probably futile. However, if it is important, I will work with utmost haste, and be assured that I would never not meet the deadline originally set and agreed.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I am open to beta-ing any type of story, although I would prefer not to beta hentai/smut in yuri/heterosexual scenarios... I feel slightly awkward around those. Slash, however, is entirely my poison of choice :)
I usually favour fics with an interesting plotline and I tend to prefer those with an intriguing twist - whether it's a surprise/rare pairing, or some unexpected plot devices that are rarely touched upon I don't mind, but, as stated formerly, I'll beta anything :)
SLASH: any type. Seriously :) YURI/FEMSLASH: anything but smut, HET: same as yuri- anything but smut.
I'm open to all genres as well.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I'll never outright refuse to betaread any story, though, again, I'd prefer to avoid having to edit yuri/heterosexual smut/hentai, but I'm more than happy to work with yuri/het that isn't smut :)
Oh, and I don't really do poetry, either.
I won't touch Mary-Sues or self-inserts with a ten foot barge pole, as I find those to be exceptionally awful almost all the time. Unless they're parodies/crack. Then, by all means, come in :D
