|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am currently a graduate student. I read a lot and of all genres, so I have a sense of how a story should flow and a lot of experience reading and revising. I expect anyone who wants me to beta to write at the best of their ability and to make their purpose in the story clear so I can read with your expectations in mind. I expect any work to be proofread for spelling and grammar. That is something anyone can do, and so when I read, I will not be editing for you. Instead, I will read for content and style. I want to work with you to make a piece of art, and catering to an audience is not my priority. I will always try to make your writing more effective, and I won't be afraid to tell you to delete whole paragraphs or chapters when they don't contribute to the story. I will do my best to be honest and not to hold back any criticism. I expect to have conversations with you if you want me to beta; I won't accept a rough draft and just hand it back with red marks, but rather I want to have a back-and-forth so I can give you more effective advice. I will be very honest, and I might be a bit harsh. If that's what you're looking for, please PM me.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I will focus on how you can manipulate your writing to suit your purpose, whether it's creating an image in the mind of the reader or imitating a character's voice. I will read for characterization and how each part contributes overall to a story. Consistency is very important to me, and I will pay attention to small details that, hopefully, will make your story fuller. I will ask you to tell me what you want the story to do, what kind of reaction you want to elicit from the audience, and I will try to help you achieve that goal.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I might ask you to change too much. I know a lot of people become attached and are afraid to lose their style. If this happens, please let me know, and we can discuss and work around it. As I said earlier, I will not be mining your writing for spelling and grammatical errors, unless it detracts from the story.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I just ask you, the writer, to stay true to your own writing and not to succumb to pressures from readers. I will ask you if you intend to stay true to the story details and style of the original work. If you do, I expect you to do your research. If not, I may ask you explain why these additions or this style is better. If you have a story that's not part of a fandom on my list, ask. I missed a lot of books, especially, that I know well.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I dislike sex scenes for the sake of sex scenes and violence for the sake of violence. If you're going to include it, it had better contribute to the story in a way that nothing else can.
