Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am May Sparrow, known to my close friends as just May, to not-so-close as MaySparrow. I'm a pretty young person (who will not be giving her age out to the public, thanks), but I love to write, even if sometimes (read:often) I can't finish writing a oneshot without some pressure put on by my few but good friends. No, I don't really have a life, just school and a wonderful invention called the internet. I will sit for hours on end reading with music ringing in my ears, be it on fanfiction(dot)net with Youtube or a very good paperback with my old-fashioned headphones on. br /

br /

As a beta-reader, I mainly look out for grammar and the "flow" of the story, making sure that what the author is saying is coming along clear. I'll read through the document, and if it's a file sent to me, I will highlight or use a different color in my corrections, red for pointing out to remove some bit, blue to add some certain points, and green on my own paragraph to write what could be improved. I tend to go over each paragraph and write a good few lines asking about it, but if there isn't much to be corrected besides grammar, I will skip to the next chapter or write how well the paragraph was written (everyone needs a bit of praise).br /

br /

As I correct, I'll go over the "flow" as I said; namely, how the plot fits together in an organized pattern. I may add a not near the end of the story to speak about my personal aspects of the story, such as what could be changed, what could be improved, what needs to be rewritten. This is different from the short lines for each paragraph, as this is defined for the document in its entirety.br /

br /

If a person has any questions, they can get in contact with me via AIM, as I am almost always on (like I said, no life), or my email, or simply through private messaging. I am perfectly comfortable with any method of contact, save for public comments (but then again, no one really speaks a whole conversation through comments, do they?).br /

br /

I will always keep a copy of any document sent to me, including my own remarks on it. This is if by any chance a person manages to lose the file (it has happened to a friend more than once). I will accept going over the revised document if asked, but multiple times over one chapter I will not accept.

My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Reading:br /

br /

As said above, I usually have a lot of free time on my hands. That said, I am also an extreme speed-reader. I read about ten chapters a day in certain good stories or novels. I can go over a file very quickly, depending on the story, and almost always in one sitting. I will be able to return a file with feedback in very good time, something I pride myself on.br /

br /

Writing:br /

br /

I write in third person past tense, mostly, though there are times when I will write in first person past tense. My stories may also vary between omniscient or not. Over the past few months, I feel I have been able to write with a certain flow of action and dialogue that makes progress in a story while still being able to absorb a single moment. I enjoy writing metaphors, while still making the story understandable to most. I try to maintain a certain speech pattern and personality for each character, to the point where, if they have to make a certain personal, emotional change in the story, it is slow and it still fits into their own character.br /

br /

Beta-reading:br /

br /

I cover the basic grounds; spelling, grammar, and punctuation are an obvious must. However, I also read for action, where wording is extremely important; one misplaced name may throw off the story for me and I will point it out and offer a pronoun in its place. When I read a story, I see it taking place in my mind as a movie. This means I know the importance of the actions flowing together and making sense. If I can't picture it too well, I'll point it out.

My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Writer:br /

br /

Though I do it on purpose, sometimes I will write in run-ons. I personally think it has to do with the emotion of the story, and the stress. I feel my point comes across, but some may not be fond of it. I also sometimes feel like I cannot pin the entirety of the character's personality, so I tend not to write in that person's viewpoint, out of apprehension I will write out of character. When I do write in that character's point of view, that's when I need a beta-reader. I'll admit my imperfection there. I do not write specific descriptions of setting or dress; if anything, I may write a vague description and allow the writer to fill in the rest. This may irk some, who do like to know detail. br /

br /

Beta-reading:br /

br /

If I'm in a rush, and there may be times where I am in a rush, I may send off a document with errors I may have missed. It happens. The few times I have done so, the author has been wise enough to go over the work once more themselves and point such mistakes out to me, while correcting such bits themselves. This is always a wise thing to do, and I suggest every writer go over a beta'ed copy of their work.br /

br /

When school gets in the way, and sports, those will be my first priority, not a story. This in mind, there will be times when I may not finish beta'ing for a person.br /

br /

I may come off as stubborn and perhaps rude when beta'ing to some. I apologize right now for that, it comes from being a bit of a smart-ass. I don't want to fight over anything like a story, so I'll try to silence my bitter side, but there are, as always, times when I cannot keep my temper in check. I hope my temper mellows with age.

Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I, personally, love a good story that includes modern mythology. Any Greek or Roman mythology interests me to the fullest, while I may not be an expert on the subject. I would love a story where the author has done his or her research about the topic.br /

br /

I also enjoy magic; you can thank a childhood of Harry Potter for this one. Supernatural creatures are my cup of tea.br /

br /

I will read almost any genre of any age rating, ranging from romance for mature readers (though it's not my favorite) to horror and crime for younger readers/writers.br /

br /

A well-developed plot is the best, where the author has thought through the entirety of the plot and is free to use their imagination to make it flow even better. I approve of writing deeply within character. Characterization is so very important in any story, fanfiction or otherwise. Dialogue will always help as well; it can add humor into any story when there is a tense background. br /

br /

I'll take oneshots or full-blown stories, though I would prefer in the author had worked with me on oneshots before pulling out the big guns.

Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Like I said above, I'll take M rated stories, but they're not my favorite. I will read romance, but if a character is completely doing something he wouldn't be doing normally, I will not read it. It is like a bit of an itch I can't scratch. I will not be comfortable with non-con, but full out rape I will not accept, under any circumstances.br /

br /

Due to a lack of personal expansion of horizons, I will read very few fanfictions. I will mainly read Hanna is Not a Boy's Name, Invader Zim, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, and Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.br /

br /

If a person doesn't have even a vague idea about grammar or literacy, I will not waste my time sitting down and fixing obvious errors for them. I'm sorry, but I don't have that much patience for such a thing. I also feel that if I am not respected by any author, I have the right to turn them down. I am not just a spell-check machine you toss your story into. I am a person with my own ideas and beliefs, and if you treat me any less than you for my personal views on your plotline, I will go on my merry way and leave you in my dust. I will not stand for any sort of disrespect towards myself or any other writer/reader/beta-reader.
