Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Hi there! I'm really just your typical FFN writer. I enjoy reading, and writing, immensely, and having opportunity to help others do the same is something very close to my heart! As you can probably tell from my work, I have this irritating tendency to overlook mistakes until I read something over - but when I do read it over, I miss nothing, so give me a shot and I can guarantee you won't regret it. ;P

As a beta-reader, I'm far more interested in helping you improve your story than rewriting it or blindly fixing errors. If they're there, I'll point them out, and if I can explain something to you, I will, but as a classically trained British English writer (or as close to it as is possible for someone as hideously inept as I am) I am loath to simply identify mistakes. I want you to understand, and I will do everything in my power to make sure you do! Otherwise, I do my best to love what I'm reading and find the errors in it, and I'd like to think I'm fairly passable at that, so...give me a shot. I'll try doing the same!

All I ask is that if you intend to accept my services as a beta-reader, you accept that I read and re-read, taking up to three days per chapter, of other people's work, before I either give up on it or return it. I use OpenOffice, so I'll try to improve errors using the reference tools included in it, but otherwise I'll use my printer and scanner to manually edit your chapters before sending them to you as images. In return, you don't send me something you wouldn't be willing to read yourself - I expect a certain degree of dedication, as well as a certain degree of talent and technical skill (grammar, punctuation, spelling, et cetera). Anything that isn't relatively easy to appreciate (for instance, littered with terrible misspellings, improperly punctuated constructions and/or malformed sentences), I probably won't be particularly receptive of, though I am perfectly happy to read your overly purple/beige, over/under-wrought prose. Just ask!

Finally, please consult me about what it is you want me to beta rather than simply looking at my preferred choices - I will beta outside those categories, but they are the ones I am most comfortable with.

My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'd like to think that my strengths are my ability to write coherently, descriptively, and in a manner that is occasionally considered entertaining - spelling, grammar, punctuation, all the usual stuff to an acceptable degree. I also have a broad, functional vocabulary, and I appreciate that brevity is the soul of good writing - so, when it comes to technical ability, I think I've got it down pat. Besides my wanton slaughter of the emoticon. :D

When it comes to the nitty-gritty of the matter, the actual story, I'd like to think that I have things covered. I can follow a good plot and generally am capable of understanding the trains of thought that pervade a piece, meaning I can put together stuff. Like, plot twists and whatevs. Either way, coherence, original media attribute preservation, readability, entertainment value and quality are all concepts that I appreciate and can help you with, to a great degree!

My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm overly critical, and sometimes incapable of quantifying exactly what it is that I don't like about a piece. I have a tendency to alter your style of writing to reflect mine, I can be unfriendly, and there is a distinct possibility that I may be incapable of improving your work. I'm more of an editor than a beta-reader, truth be told, but I'm capable of overcoming all of these things for science (the science of writing good fanfiction, that is)!

I'm also terrifically dense. It, and my crippling laziness, are my worst traits, and they mean that I miss out on a lot of things, get overly embarrassed by other things, and occasionally skip over large sections of writing when I feel I have the gist of something. I DON'T do these things as a beta-reader, but be warned - I'm just as human as everybody else, and that's something you, as the writer, ought to know. :D

Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
Nope! Besides what I mention in the following section, I'm happy to review whatever you're willing to throw at me. I'm fond of good slash, het, and the occasional femslash piece, and I love thrillers, romance, humor and science fiction, especially when they're all rolled into that great big ball I call general.
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Truth be told I'm not a fan of badly written angst. When something gets angsty, I get out, if it's Waaaaaaangst - and by that I mean, perceivable as baseless. Middle-class issues like "Y WONT HE LOK AT MEEEEE" or "GAWD MY FAMILY IS SO BORING, I HATE MY LIFE" or "I GOT BULLIED IN SCHOOL WAAAAAAA" or anything along those lines piss me off, because we've all gone through that, and not all of us react like scared little weaklings.

Read this: http:/tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Wangst - if it falls under any of those categories, NO. Also, try to keep the lemon toned down. I can read sex, but I don't write it well, so I can't improve it, and I also get embarrassed because I'm kinda prudish. ;_;
