Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am both a published author and a teacher. I enjoy reading and writing. My available periods to read may be limited, but hopefully I will be able to give the stories I read some helpful, constructive critiques. As a warning, I will be brutally honest. I won't tell you, "This is awful!" because that's not constructive. But I will say, "This character's actions make no sense" or "the grammar makes this almost impossible to read" if that is what I think. This is how I expect people to review my work, so it is also the way I review the work of others. I don't demand, "I read yours, now you read mine," but I do love trading work for reviews.
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I have a strong feel for dialogue, its level of realism. I only beta-read for series I am very familiar with. I can get pretty attached to certain characters, and can usually tell right away if they're acting reasonable (aka "in character") or not. As far as grammar goes, I'm about as good as the next person. I know that you probably meant, "I'm from Japan" as opposed to "I'm form Japan."
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
With few exceptions, I tend to read stories only once and make comments as I go, the exception being if I just really, really liked it or if someone's written another draft and wants me to read it. Despite my love of character-driven stories, I do not keep track of names very well. Instead, I tend to remember characters by their looks or their occupation. (aka. "the pirate," "the ninja," "the red-headed girl.")
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I prefer one-shot stories, or at least stories under 10,000 words. I love alternate universes, putting the characters in completely different worlds. I've also got a spot soft for well-developed original characters.
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
It's really hard to get me into a romance story. I enjoy writing romance into my stories, but I get very picky when reading stories where the only point is the couple. (There's few couples in the series I watch that I actually care about.) You've got a much better chance with something outside the romance genre. As far as profanity goes, I will read it, but I find it is a rare story that uses profanity in a way that makes sense (as opposed to just trying to make the characters sound more "adult.")
