Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
My favoured fandoms are: Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Sharpe (Bernard Cornwell), The A-Team, Stargate (incl Atlantis), Glee and LOTR. I'm reasonably conversant with a number of other fandoms so it never hurts to ask. I'd ask that we establish deadlines and methods of communication beforehand since I also manage a Life Beyond Fic which includes post grad study, full time work, cats, chooks, a garden and a husband. Email makes me happiest. If you submit a piece of writing to me I might just look at spelling and grammar and hand it back or I might engage you in a flurry of email-versations about what you are trying to achieve, what you envision the themes of the piece being, where you would feel comfortable making changes etc. It depends on how your piece strikes me when I read it through. I'd ask that if you are trying for a multi-chaptered opus that you either send me the whole thing (or a big chunk of it at least) rather than a chapter by chapter feed or else be able to talk about things like the story arc and plot structure for clarity's sake.
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I tend to concentrate on expression, grammar and characterisation and can be pedantic about canon unless there is a sound reasoning behind departure from it. I'm pretty casual about other peoples' style - unless it really makes no sense whatsoever, or could easily be improved by something simple, I'm not going to comment on your personal style. All the colours make the rainbow etc etc... That said, however, I beta read as an editor not a fan and my feedback will always include concrit. I love language and encourage interesting and individual use of it.
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I work full time and can't always come back to you the next day. I have very little patience with some kinds of fic - song fic, non-canonical slash, crack!fic and the ones where everyone is suddenly a high school student come most immediately to mind. I can't read them without getting itchy and any crit I give will most likely be harsher than I usually might - although, I welcome someone taking up the challenge to convert me! The devotion I have to canon may be seen as a weakness by some. I like the canon for a reason and most radical departures from it just don't work in my view. Still, surprise me. Also - I live in Australia. We use UK spelling and grammatical form and words and for things, like trousers, scones, brollies and the humble cuppa. We get US terms from TV and movies but that's as far as it goes. You may need to be patient!
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I am pretty open to story style but shorter pieces are easier to beta than long novel length masterpieces simply because - and I speak from experience - those kinds of pieces get restructured a great deal before they get published (or, they should). I am willing to have a crack at just about anything, however. Poetry can always be iffy because it's a personal thing but I am happy to help with structure, measure etc.
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I'm not too keen on crack!fic, sugar!fic, PWP and those fics where everyone suddenly goes to the author's high school. I also harbour suspicion about character/OC pairings - if I scent a Mary Sue I will work to help you redo that character for everyone's sakes. Getting your story burned by the Protectors of the Plot Continuum (long may they live) is not the way to celebrity.
