Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I like to make suggestions and work with authors who are open to positive criticism but willing to defend why they've written something a certain way. I'm not a grammar nazi, but have a good grasp of grammar to help guide someone on track. I also have experience in working with learning disabilities so I'm comfortable working with authors who deal with dyslexia and similar.
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My biggest skill is being able to track a wide span of plot points and find weaknesses that might undermine the main theory a story is following. I'm grounded enough in the sciences to help fill in the blanks, but not so much I'll fuss about getting every single detail textbook correct.
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I like things to make sense. I struggle with reading stories where there's no real logic as to why a character's personality changed and can get easily frustrated with "just because I wanted it" as reasoning. I like seeing character development to the point of the major change of behavior and so forth.
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I adore family based stories. If you've got a story swarming with small fry, you'll be my favorite author in no time. If you're needing a nitpick reader, I like helping make sure the tech and military background in stories is accurate.
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I prefer to avoid stories with graphic scenes of rape or torture. I won't decline stories that touch upon those areas, as my favorite fandoms do include those as realities, but I always feel there are ways to express such things happening without describing them in gory detail. I'm also not a fan of "sloppy military" where a character is made military just because, with no real research into military life/behavior/training. Wildly inaccurate facts are a huge turn off: I recently stopped reading a story because the author described the ranch as 75,000 acres owned by a single owner. Corporate cattle ranches aren't that big! It wasn't the only major inaccuracy, but it was the final kicker.
