|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am a new fan fiction beta-reader. However, I have read fan fiction of various genres for around eight years now, and I have real-world editorial experience. I like to read a story straight through once, stopping only to correct minor grammar and spelling problems. Then, I reread the story searching for errors to correct. Afterward, I address content issues, such as plot holes, character development, etc. This is usually accomplished by highlighting problematic text and annotating the original story. Once this process is complete, I will e-mail the author his/her story back with a note summarizing the strengths/weaknesses and asking for authorial feedback. This beta-author back-and-forth revision process will continue until the author is satisfied. Anyone wishing to acquire my services should be aware I do thorough work. While I realize not all of my suggestions will be implemented when the author revises his/her work, I do ask my authors to at least consider my recommendations before rejecting them.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am particularly adept at identifying grammar and spelling errors. Additionally, I have acquired a good eye when it comes to noticing problems in fluency; this may include transitions or plot issues. For the fandoms I know intimately, I would also argue I have a fairly good ear for characters' voices.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I want to fix everything! Unfortunately, this is impossible and, ultimately, not worth the trouble, as the final product needs to reflect the author's original vision accurately. I work actively to remind myself that just because I would not take a story down a certain rabbit hole, it does not mean that particular rabbit hole is unworthy of exploration by another author.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
The lines in genres are often blurred, so I am going to make the sweeping generalizations that I prefer dramatic and romance stories. However, in the fandoms I read most, drama and romance could be mixed with mystical or sci-fi elements or taken to the extremes of being horror or tragic death pieces. Both plot- and character-driven pieces interest me, and I have no preference in terms of fiction length.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I would prefer to not beta parodies or other uber-fluffy, silly pieces. While I enjoy reading this type of fiction once in a while, I don't think I could consistently edit these kinds of works. Additionally, bodice-ripper romances with purposefully elevated language do not match my literary aesthetics.
