Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I love fanfiction. I love writing in general. I love talking to people about writing, and stories, and characters. If you're looking for someone that will go over your story and give you an honest impression and things that I think you can improve on, both in terms of style, plot, tone, and anything else I notice, then I think we'll get along. If what you're looking for in a beta reader is someone that will take a critical eye to your work and make suggestions to help you craft a better story and become a better writer, then send me a message. I will do my best to take a look at what you've constructed and help you make it better, so it that's what you're looking for, I think we'll get /br /

There are certain characters or plot developments I don't like, but I will do my best not to let my own biases affect how I critique your work. I understand that we all have different tastes, and sometimes we won't agree, but a story is a precious thing to its writer, so I'll do my best to avoid criticizing on the basis of me just not liking some aspect of your story. That said, I do reserve the right to either not beta something that doesn't interest me, or to drop a story if I just can't bring myself to read it anymore. For me to bring my best abilities to betaing your work, I need to at least be interested in it, and if I'm not then we both suffer, so apologies in advance if that's the /br /

Of course, I'm going to require a few things of you as well. First and foremost, I need an open channel of communication. If I can't talk to you, preferably in an Instant Messenger format of some kind, then it's going to be really hard to explain why I've made some suggestions or what things I think aren't working. So if you want to work with me on a level beyond "Check this for typos" (which, by the way, I probably won't accept requests for anyway) then I want to be able to talk to you. Second, I need you to be receptive to my suggestions. If I make a suggestion, don't respond by ignoring it, and don't explain it away right away. I understand the impulse, but I do not enjoy working with defensive writers. I'm not saying you have to accept all of my suggestions, but I will ask you not to dismiss it out of hand. Other than that, just try to respect that I'm spending my time to try and help you improve, and don't impose on my time. I want to help, but If you come at me and say you need something done immediately then it's probably not going to happen. I make some allowances for people I like and have worked with a lot, but until then give me the time I need. br /br /

Lastly, if you're asking me to correct grammar and the like, I would be happy to help, but I will ask that you make the effort to improve so I don't keep correcting things over and over. If you don't know exactly how to punctuate dialogue I'll help you fix it, but if you show no interest in learning how to do it and just want me to fix it every time then we'll have issues.

My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Characters and story are what I'm best at, though I'm also pretty good at flow and word choice. If you want to polish your writing then I can help you. If you want to beef up your word count then not so much. Good writing usually involves a lot of cutting unnecessary words and even whole scenes. If you're against cutting anything, ever, then we probably won't get along. br /br /

Working with keeping characters true to canon while still letting them grow and develop is something I love to do, so I'd be happy to help with that. Keeping things realistic, by which I mean making sure the way characters behave and how situations are handled in the story not like grounded in reality, is something I love doing. I want to help you avoid making your readers take too many leaps of faith, since in my experience those have always drawn me out of stories.

My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I can do grammar, but I'm not perfect and I'll ask that you don't just rely on me not to miss anything. If I see it I ususally get it right, but sometimes my eyes slide over things, so when I finish with a draft you should run your own eyes over it again. Other than that, I can be a little slow.
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
Hit me with whatever you like, besides below. I have a fondness for action and epic plots, so I love those, and I love violence. I even enjoy smut, on occasion, so if that's something you need someone to look at then I can do that too.
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I'll beta just about anything, but developing a realistic romance is not something I'm good at, so I'll have fewer suggestions for that kind of story. Songfics and poems aren't something I really want to read.
