Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Hey folks,

I have been around here for a long time, but it's been a long time since I've done much writing myself. I started writing fan fiction when I was 10, and I am now 28. I have a degree in sociology (lots of research, lots of writing) and some experience in technical writing and editing. In my day job, I write lots of proposals, letters, etc. If you are looking for someone to help with spelling, grammar, punctuation etc. than I can definitely be of service to you. I am also more than happy to help you figure out characterization, plotline or whatever else. I enjoy bouncing around ideas and helping out with whatever I can. br /

br /

PLEASE don't send me something that you've put no thought or effort into that is riddled with mistakes and inconsistencies. I realize that part of the job of a beta is to correct those mistakes, but it should not take more time or effort for me to read and edit than it did for you to write. I am here to help you, not hold your hand and do everything for you. Take the initiative and run your work through a spellcheck at the very least, maybe give it another read and see what you can catch yourself. Because honestly, if you don't care about your first draft, I don't care enough to /

br /

But if you want my help, please do this: PM me. Tell me a little about yourself (including your age group, because I like to know what I'm dealing with in terms of skill levels) and your story, including any ideas you might have for future developments. "Please read my Harry Potter story" is not good enough for me, sorry. Give me enough information that I can fairly decide if I can be of help to you. Also give me an idea of when/how often you plan on updating, so I can fit it into my schedule. If you update Wednesdays, tell me this so I can make sure I have a chapter edited and ready for you by Tuesday at the /

br /

As far as my style... I make all changes in pink, so that you notice them. I will also add comments, whether I liked something, something confused me or something just makes no sense. If you stockpile your chapters, I will do the same during my breaks from work or school so that you have posting-ready chapters for whenever you need them. I am also more than happy to do a second or even third round of edits if you feel like you need them, or have made a lot of changes since I first edited and want me to doublecheck that you fixed everything.

My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am best with spelling, grammar, punctuation etc. I am pretty good at fixing any errors in word choice or sentence flow as well, and I can catch a lot of inconsistencies in plot or /

br /

My biggest strength is my honesty. I'm not one to sugarcoat my words and if something doesn't work, I'll tell you. That way, you know exactly what you need to fix and how to fix it. I will not be needlessly rude or cruel, but my job as a beta is to make sure that your chapter is the absolute best it can be. If you're sensitive to constructive criticism, you might want to find another beta.

My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Right now, a huge weakness of mine is consistency. This is a big reason why I like to stockpile edited chapters. I'm not going into details, but my personal life is prone to going a bit crazy and I have periods where I don't respond and also where I can't get to chapters as often as I like. As those who are having me beta reading stories have learned, the key is bugging me so that things don't slip my mind, but even then sometimes, it's just not possible. When things are like that, I will try my best to communicate with you (especially if I don't think I can get your work edited by when you'd like to post). So... just be patient with me. br /

br /

Also, I'm not so great at long, flowing descriptions. I tend to forget that others can see the pictures inside of my head. It's something I'm working on in my own writing, but just know that it's something that I tend to not be able to help with.

Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I prefer authors that put time and effort into their stories and are just as committed to creating the best work possible as I am. I prefer stories with characters who are flawed and who are sometimes horrible people, but who are consistent and real and lovable despite their bad turns, a plot that isn't dedicated to glorifying a character who is just a stand-in for the author and isn't full of romantic /

br /

I obviously have the most experience with Pokemon stories, but be aware of this if your story is based on the animeverse- I never saw anything past the first season and have no idea who these Drew and Paul people are and why they keep popping up in every other story. I work best with gameverse and original characters. Just so you are /

Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I do enjoy reading sci-fi and fantasy stories, but I don't think I could do those genres justice as a beta-reader.
