Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Please don't ask me to beta for you unless you've read my profile. I am a very stern beta and if you write fluff and just want a fangirl who knows how to punctuate, I am not your girl.

Yet another update: No really, TWILIGHT SUCKS. I cannot emphasize this enough. If you have written Twilight fanfiction, don't contact me asking to beta anything else you've written. Anyone who is willing to think enough about that series to write fanfiction about it and isn't absolutely horrified by it is not someone I'm willing to work with. It says something about you and what you value as a person, and your respect for women (yes, even if you're a woman yourself).

Further Update: I DON'T DO HARRY POTTER HETERO (unless its James/Lily or Remus/Tonks) please stop asking. In related news, if you're a fan of Twilight (unless your a LOLfan, I guess that's okay) really, you probably shouldn't bother reading any further. If you are anything but horrified after reading that sexist condescending single-note self insertion masturbatory fantasy, I doubt I'm the right beta for you. I feel like a dick saying this, but I've had several requests from people who tell me up front (like its something to brag about) or have in their FFN authorname that they're Twilight fans. No. Just /br /br /

UPDATE: I feel the need to expand on this, as I'm pretty sure I've had one person find me far too harsh a mistress. I do actually expect you to know how to write and know your genre. If you use hack writing tricks like deus ex machina (if you don't know what that means, I'm probably not your gal), think you're funny, have severe Mary Sues/Marty Stus, etc. I will call you on every single one of them, they aren't "artistic differences" they're bad writing. Additionally, although I'm happy to help you work out the details of worlds (Harry Potter, Velgrath) you should have a strong idea of how the world works and it's general time line. AUs are fine, as long as they're actually AUs and not you just getting things /br /br /

I have formal writing training and actually have a degree in writing. I've spent a lot of time in college classes reading and beta-ing original work. My own work is not a good example of my beta skill, but I am an excellent second set of eyes for someone else's work. br /br /br /

I am firm and blunt, so if you have a fragile ego, I'm probably not the beta for you. I am not mean, though, just honest. However, if I have to keep telling you something over and over, and you keep making excuses for why it's okay (writing a really bad Cockney accent, a jarring or disruptive narrater, a repeated insistence that a character is constantly bursting into tears over the tiniest thing) I will be brutally honest and say things like "This doesn't work." or "I hate your character, I assume that's not the reaction you want, so she really needs to stop being so arrogant". But that's only after I've explained it to you a time or /br /br /

I like to talk shop and ideas, and am best at helping with the craft of writing, as opposed to the more mechanical side (punctuation, etc). Characterization, dialogue, story flow, plot logic, world building, and realism are particularly strong areas for me. I'd probably be most useful to you if you're a writer who is serious enough about your craft that you're looking to grow and improve. I can do a decent job with grammar, and can catch words that spell check misses, and know the difference between it's and its and then and than /br /br /

I often tend to ask questions about peoples work, instead of just making suggestions (although I certainly do that too). I am likely to ask you things like: "Why did you chose to have him react this way" or "what in her back story makes this reaction make sense" etc. to get you to come up with your own /br /br /

As to the "how" I'm more then willing to work with you on what your preference is for how the physical beta-ing takes place. I can work with whatever system you're comfortable with. As you can tell, I am long winded, so if things click between us, you'll often get a large volume of response from me.

My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I recognize good writing when I see it. I am a writer myself and have a decent idea of what professional criticism is like. I am really good at realism. I have several areas of extensive knowledge that I can use to help you sort of fact check and make sure your logic ducks are in a row. I also am very strong at /br /br /

Realism is a knack I have. My specialty is gender and sexuality issues, but I have a wide variety of topics that I have extensive knowledge in and can help you with the realism of your writing (and yes even fantasy writing contains realism).br /br /br /

I have extensive knowledge in wilderness survival, medical emergency, college life, gender dynamics, gender norms, gender and sexuality anything really, gay rights, world religions, anything to do with winter, and disability (most specifically: Deafness, blindness, and mobility issues including paralysis, lower limb amputation, and more congenital disorders). Other areas of knowledge are WWII, Revolutionary War (US), transgender issues, horseback riding, swordplay, fantasy/ mediaeval dress, Russian language, American Sign Language, sociology, police procedure, US legal system, wolves, the Troubles in Northern Ireland, the Israel/Palestine conflict, kosher dietary restrictions, a decent grasp of British slang, Maori culture, American Colonial history. br /br /br /

This may seem like a crazy list, but, if any of these things come up in your work, I'm your gal. If you just read that and are wondering what I'm talking about or how any of that could ever be important... you probably don't want me as your beta. If your curious how any of this could ever pertain to fanfiction, drop me a line, I'd love to tell you _

My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My grammar isn't perfect. I can get you in the ball park, but I am not a professional editor. I can't always sugar coat things. I try very hard, but if you can't take caring criticism you'll probably not like me.
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
Criminal Minds, FAKE, Harry Potter, and Velgrath (Mercedes Lackey's Heralds world) are the four fan areas I am most knowledgeable about. For Fake, I'm only interested in Dee/Ryo pairings, other pairings sprinkled in is fine, but Dee/Ryo should be the focus. No death-fics please. For Harry Potter, I'm more flexible. My favorite is Remus/Sirius but I will do any slash pairing that is well set up and among consenting adults or children who are in age-appropriate relationships (ie: not adult/child pairings, no 12 yr olds having sex, you get the idea). I am willing to consider hetero pairings of Remus/Tonks or James/Lily. I will also do yuri pairings, especially involving Tonks. br /br /br /

br /

br /br /

br /

br /br /br /

br /

br /br /

br /

I will beta Velgrath-set Mercedes Lackey fiction of any canon pairs or original characters, slash or nonsexual would be my preference. Heralds, Hawkbrothers, Shin-a-in, it's all good. This includes the mage-wars /br /br /

Criminal Minds: As I've said, I'm a slash writer, so I would prefer same-sex couples or none at all. My favorite character by far and away is Dr. Spencer Reid, but right now, I'm pretty open to whatever. I won't do Reid/Gideon fics. That's creepy and a major abuse of power on Gideon's part. On the other hand, if that's the point of your fic (that Gideon would be a horrible person for sleeping with Reid) then we can talk. Also, no Hotch and his new lady-friend. Hotch and Haley are fine. br /br /br /

I like stories that have drama, romance and action, but that's just what I prefer to read. I can and will beta almost any combination of things, including poetry. To me, it's all about how well the story is being told. I can handle almost anything if it's well and tastefully done. I WILL do BDSM (this is not a preference of mine, but I suspect it might be a little hard to find a beta for such things, and I am willing) as long as it is consensual between adults. I will also do issues of cutting, eating disorders, and suicide, but be warned: I am well versed in the psychology around all of these and expect you to be as well. Please tell me when you contact me if you are including anything like that (same goes for rape-fic, see below).

Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Adult/child pairings. I'm not talking about technicalities, one partner is 18 and the other is 15-16. I mean like one partner is 15 and the other is 35. As a rule of thumb, if one character is old enough to be the mother/father of another character, I'm not interested, even if they are adults. If there is a huge age difference and the younger of the two characters is over the age of consent (for same-sex pairings, that's almost universally 18) I will consider it only if you can give me a very compelling reason why this would /br /br /

br /

br /br /

br /

br /br /br /

br /

br /br /

br /

Incest: I can cope if it's an issue of incest abuse, and is either in the past tense, or furthers the story some how. Stories that are just kinky sex between relations as erotica, I'll pass, thanks. Additionally, if you're just using it as a crutch for more angst, I'll call you on it. Also, see my notes on /br /br /

br /

br /br /

br /

br /br /br /

br /

br /br /

br /

Rape fics: Okay, here's the thing, I will do rape fics, but they must be GOOD. I don't want to read your torture porn, I don't want to read rape as erotica or fetish. But, if you have a story that is about dealing with rape that's fine. Be warned: I'm well versed in issues of rape, PTSD, and male survivors of rape. If you're using rape as a hurt/comfort crutch, you probably don't want me. br /br /br /

Super effeminate weepy gay men who act like school girls: Men are men, even when they're sleeping with other men. I'm more than willing to help you understand issues of same sex relationships and gender dynamics, or even men who are intentional written effeminate, but if you simply think that there is a bottom/uke and he should cry a lot... no thanks. br /br /br /

br /

Severus as straight. I know it's canon, but I just can't do it /br /br /

br /br /br /

br /

br /br /

br /

Please, please take note: I am willing to do only two hetero pairings James/Lily and Remus/Tonks (in the Velgrath world I will do any canon hetero relationship.) I have gotten a ton of requests asking me to beta hetero couples. I am a slash writer. I am very passionate about slash. I feel hetero relationships are boring, enforce gender norms, and sexist, generally speaking. Most of the time they're self-insertion fics anyway. Even the best Remus/Tonks I've ever read was a self-insertion. So please, please stop asking me to beta your hetero fics unless they are a canon couple. I'm honored that you're interested, but I am not the right beta for /br /br /

br /

br /br /

br /

br /br /br /

br /

br /br /

br /

HARRY POTTER AUTHORS TAKE NOTE: I thought when I ruled out torture porn, hetero, incest, etc I didn't need to spell out that I don't have any interest in deatheater centered fics (Severus notwithstanding). Unless it is a redemption fic, I'm not interested, I don't like the bad guys, I don't think they're interesting, I think they're jerks. br /br /br /

br /

br /br /

br /

br /br /br /

br /

br /br /

br /

OCs: I will do OCs but you'd better be really good. I hate self insertion more than I hate Mary Sue/Marty Stu's, and its a rare OC fic that the OC isn't just a stand in for the author. If you have an OC that's a main character, explain a lot about him/her when you contact me.
