|Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
A beta is really whatever you want it to be. If you want someone to check your spelling and grammar, and that's it, that's a beta. If you want someone to bounce ideas off, that's a beta. If you want someone to point out where things are maybe a bit out of character, that's a beta. If you want someone to check your britishisms, that's a beta (well, technically, that's a britpicker. But a britpicker is still a type of beta!). If you just want feedback from someone, regarding whatever, that's a beta. If you want someone to point out inconsistencies (i.e. "You said his hair was green in chapter 14, but in 30, you say it's purple!"), that's a beta. If you just want someone to look it over for general reactions, that's a beta. If you just want someone to get on your case so that you actually finish your fic, that's beta too.
As a beta, I tend to focus mostly on spelling, grammar, continuity, and sentence-structure. Some people tell me I can be sort of harsh, and by some standards, I might be. The way I see it, I just try to remove any stumbling blocks between the reader and the author's material.
I don't offer to beta unless I think the material is really, really worth getting out there. My editing style isn't for everyone. However, I use Microsoft Word's reviewing toolbar (Track Changes) when making edits, so that you can see exactly where I made a change, and how I changed it, and what it was before I changed it. If you want, I can do a trial edit for you on one of your previous chapters, so you can see how I work.
|My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
As a beta, I tend to focus mostly on spelling, grammar, continuity, and sentence-structure. I might make comments on word choice, or suggestions on various other things. I'm very, very, very thorough, but I read very quickly.
|My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm not a very good britpicker. Also, if the story's not interesting to me, I tend to zone out. I'm not very good at helping develop severly-underdeveloped characters, though I am good at small characterization tweaks. I'm not very good at betaing action scenes, as I tend to gloss over them.
|Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I like Harry Potter stories, Inuyasha stories, Merlin stories, SWAC stories...I'm pretty open to many categories. If you ask me to beta a one-shot, there are higher odds that I'll accept, because those take less time. If I've betaed something for you before, odds are, I'll do it again.
|Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I'm not very good with slash stories, and action scenes, I tend to gloss over.
