Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I've been writing Star Trek fan fiction since I was 13 years old. Now, over 3 decades later, I've finally started submitting my own work. I'd love to share my passion and delight in that fact by helping others create and craft the best stories they can, stories that shine with their own voice and vision. br /br /br /

I am involved in several non-fan fiction writing projects and communities, as well, and I do a good deal of beta reading, critiquing, and reviewing, as well as revising my own works. I'm committing to learning to do this in a way that suits each /br /br /

My general practice is to read through the project and any associated notes, then let it settle and simmer for a day or a few before going back through and making content suggestions, line-by-line, along with general notes. br /br /br /

However, I'm very willing to work with the writer's individual needs and tastes. For longer projects, I'd prefer to beta the first chapter or scene, then send back the beta to be certain our styles are a good fit.

My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
For this and the Weaknesses sections, I asked the three other people in my small critique group for their input, because I don't want to misrepresent myself. Since I've done, on average, two critiques for each of them, each month since January, I felt like they can answer to this better than I can, /br /br /

My strengths are an intuitive awareness of overarching or deeper themes that might be brought into play. I love symbolism and sensory detail, and I'm good at finding the places where adding these details could truly help the story. I'm also good at spying out things that don't need to be in the story, or things that are out of order. I'm good at helping writers develop natural dialogue, and finding places where exposition can be replaced by action or dialogue. I'm known to have an eye for strengthening openings and closings to add impact, and for logical inconsistencies.

My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I also asked my critique group colleagues to give me some input in this area. They said that my grasp of grammar can be shaky (I believe them; I failed one test in my entire high school English career - yup. It was a test on flat-out grammar rules, and I wasn't even close to passing.)br /br /br /

That said, my ear, though imperfect, isn't wretched. Just don't expect me to catch everything, or want to. I'm willing to overlook grammar in the interest of a great story. Dbr /br /br /

The other thing all of my fellow writers mentioned was that, although I sometimes have inspired ideas for what could make a character or story richer, these are my perspective, and I've had a tendency to run with them through the rest of the piece as though the changes were a given rather than just my idea of what might make things /br /br /

I'll admit that I see what they mean, and, now that I do, I'm making a conscious effort to improve. I'm not offended if my suggestions aren't taken - it's YOUR story, not mine. I'd greatly appreciate being clued in, if I do this with anyone, because it'll make me a better beta (say that three times fast!) and maybe I'll eventually be able to take that flaw out of this section of the profile. The last thing is that I'm not always the speediest at getting things back to the author. This is due in part to my Accomplice and our two homeschooled children, who always have first rights to my time. I also have a diverse array of writing projects of my own, and a fairly steady stream of critique and beta projects in other genres. br /br /br /

I also like to give each piece the time and attention it deserves, rather than rushing through. There may be times when I can offer a faster turnaround, so it doesn't hurt to ask, but if you want fast, I might not be your best /br /br /

Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I'm all about the feels. I love feeling like I'm not just in a character's head, but in their mind, heart, soul, blood, and breath. If you've got one of those; bring it on! I love depth and provocative ideas, when well executed. I like to laugh and to cry. I like sunshine with my angst, and shadows in my fluff. I'm not either/or; surprise me, and do it well, and beta-ing for you will be a joy for me. )
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I don't like huge changes to the known or perceived reality of characters WITHOUT explanation. If you can explain it well, and show you thought it through, I can agree to disagree. But it's no fun for me if I feel that it's less a difference of perspective and more a matter of a story that ignores the integrity of the characters or the reality in which they live. br /br /br /

Sex or violence for the sake of sex or violence don't work for me.
